Matt Zenitzby: Matt Zenitz09/11/23mzenitz

Each week, On3 selects coordinators of the week from each Power Five conference.

Our choices for Week 2:

ACC — Shannon Dawson, Miami OC

During Miami’s 48-33 win over No. 23 Texas A&M, the Hurricanes posted their highest point total against a ranked opponent since a win over Virginia Tech in 2002. QB Tyler Van Dyke also became the first quarterback in Miami history to throw five touchdown passes against a ranked opponent. Van Dyke finished 21 of 30 with 374 yards, the five passing TDs and no interceptions. Under their previous offensive coordinator, Josh Gattis, the Hurricanes ranked 12th out of 14 ACC teams in scoring offense versus Power Five opponents last season with an average of just 16.9 points in those nine games. Dawson previously worked at Houston.

Big 12 — Pete Kwiatkowski, Texas DC

Aside from two touchdown passes that went for a combined a 88 yards, Texas limited Alabama to just 274 yards and three field goals during the 34-24 victory over the Crimson Tide. The Longhorns’ defense also produced five sacks, tallied two interceptions and held Alabama running backs to just 63 yards on 20 carries, average of 3.2 yards per attempt.

Big Ten — Kevin Kane, Purdue DC

Kane’s defense was key in Ryan Walters securing his first win as Purdue’s head coach, a 24-17 victory over Virginia Tech. Kane’s unit held the Hokies scoreless in the second half. The defense also limited Virginia Tech to 11 rushing yards, the fewest rushing yards the Boilermakers have ever allowed in a road game in program history. In addition, Purdue had nine tackles for loss, three sacks and two interceptions.

Pac-12 — Charles Kelly, Colorado DC

The offense wasn’t the only reason for Colorado beating Nebraska Saturday. Kelly’s defense was strong too. During the 36-14 win, Kelly’s unit held the Cornhuskers to 4 of 15 on third and fourth downs and posted four takeaways. Colorado shut out Nebraska during the first half and held the Cornhuskers to just seven points until a garbage time touchdown on the last play of the game.

SEC — Ron Roberts, Auburn DC

Auburn pulled out a win at Cal despite producing just two scores and 230 yards on offense. During the 14-10 win, Roberts’ defense held the Bears to 273 yards and 4 of 18 on third downs. The Tigers also had three takeaways and three fourth down stops. The first of Auburn’s two touchdowns was set up by a takeaway from Roberts’ defense that gave the Tigers the ball at Cal’s 17-yard line.
