Urban Meyer calls out Heisman Trophy voters over voting process

This time of year is when the Heisman Trophy campaign really begins to take shape. Plenty of candidates are still vying for a spot in New York City heading into Week 12, setting up for a fascinating race. Urban Meyer was getting set to discuss his top three before calling out Heisman voters for their process.
“I’ve got one issue with the Heisman voters,” Meyer said via The Triple Option. “I’ve known Heisman voters that vote midseason because they’re lazy. I’ll say that. How do you make a decision until rivalry game? How do you make a decision until a championship game weekend? You have to make a decision before the playoffs. That doesn’t compute.”
Rob Stone then pointed out how the award is handed out before the College Football Playoff. Dec. 13 is the date this season, being six days before the first first-round game takes place. One week later is when the majority of the round will be played, cramming up the December calendar even more for some.
Meyer suggested moving the ceremony back a few weeks, waiting for the CFP to be done. He seemingly wants all postseason matters to be considered, citing the current date going back years in college football.
“Move it back,” Meyer said. “There was no playoff — the Heisman decided to do that when, shit, there were no bowl games probably back then.”

The national championship game is scheduled to take place on Jan. 19. If we waited until after then, the Heisman Trophy ceremony would take place the final week of the month or possibly even into February.
Urban Meyer gives his top three Heisman contenders
Meyer then put together his list of current Heisman Trophy contenders, all coming from the Big Ten. Unsurprisingly, two currently play for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Beginning with the player Meyer considers “the best player in the country,” wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
He then dipped into the quarterback world and mentioned Indiana‘s Fernando Mendoza. It’s tough to go against Mendoza right now, especially after putting together an incredible drive in Happy Valley to help IU beat Penn State. A touchdown throw to Omar Cooper in the back of the end zone might wind up being his Heisman moment.
Julian Sayin was the final name Meyer brought to the table. Recent years, the trophy has become about quarterbacks. Meyer pointed out how efficient Sayin has been, completing 80.9% of his throws. Being on the No. 1 team in the country certainly does not hurt either.
