Using BCS formula to predict College Football Playoff Top 25, 12-team CFP bracket

For now, college football rankings are relying on the AP poll. In just a few weeks, the College Football Playoff rankings will take over, eventually giving us the 12-team field in December. But the old method of choosing a national champion has not completely vanished.

Yes, the BCS rankings are still around, thanks to the X account BCS Know How. For the first time in the 2025 season, they have posted a top 25 following the Week 7 action.

If the postseason were to start today, here is how the College Football Playoff would look. First up, the four teams who are currently ranked inside the top four.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes

When Ohio State won its season opener, the ascension to No. 1 was a quick one. Since then, there has been zero reason to move the Buckeyes anywhere else due to dominating performances.

Based on the BCS rankings, there are zero ranked opponents remaining on the schedule. Penn State and Michigan falling off means Ohio State has a good path to at least the Big Ten Championship game.

2. Indiana Hoosiers

Saturday's game has come and gone, but Illinois is still taking a beating at the hands of Curt Cignetti and Indiana.

Maybe Indiana will be the team to meet Ohio State in Indianapolis. Not many expected them to go into Autzen Stadium and come out alive, let alone with a victory.

Curt Cignetti continues to back up his big-time statement from early in his tenure. Last season may have been a dream season but now, the Hoosiers are among the best in college football.

3. Miami Hurricanes

In the eyes of the BCS, there is a clear favorite to win the ACC. Miami comes in at No. 3 in the poll, having a large margin from the next team to show up in the conference.

The Hurricanes watched this past week from home due to a bye. Now, they host Louisville for a Friday night game in maybe an underrated matchup on the slate.

4. Texas A&M Aggies

Just a win away from the SEC Championship and CFP a season ago, Texas A&M once again finds itself in a great position. Arguably nobody in college football is playing better at the moment, even with a few close wins baked in there.

More tests in the SEC are coming in the next few weeks. If the Aggies can continue to roll, earning a bye is more than a possibility.

5. Ole Miss Rebels vs. 12. Memphis Tigers

Memphis-Ole Miss is far from an unusual sight in college football. Separated by just over 80 miles, there are 61 head-to-head tilts between the two throughout time.

However, none of them would be to this level in the College Football Playoff. A long way to go, especially since Memphis appears to be in a race to represent the Group of Five.

6. Alabama Crimson Tide vs. 11. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

How about this as an old-school rivalry renewal? Both founders of the SEC, Alabama and Georgia Tech would line up against each other for the first time since 1984.

Georgia Tech winds up being the ACC’s lone at-large bid based on these BCS rankings. Brent Key currently has his squad undefeated, hoping to continue on.

7. Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. 10. LSU Tigers

Texas Tech is in the middle of an incredible run, something people in Lubbock wanted after an active offseason. Welcoming LSU to Jones AT&T Stadium would produce one of the all-time atmospheres in program history.

Both teams still have a few tests remaining on the schedule, beginning this Saturday. A pair of wins and there is likely some positive movement in the standings.

8. Georgia Bulldogs vs. 9. Oregon Ducks

Kirby Smart vs. Dan Lanning is a matchup we have seen in recent times. The circumstances were quite different, though — being a season opener compared to a hypothetical CFP matchup.

Oregon has evolved a ton as a program too. However, right now, all attention in Eugene is on getting back to winning ways after Saturday’s home loss.
