Sahmir Hagans wins weekly ACC award
Sahmir Hagans’ kickoff return at a crucial moment of Saturday’s game against Wake Forest led to a weekly award.
Duke’s fifth-year senior receiver was named the ACC’s specialist of the week on Monday afternoon. It’s the second time this season he’s won the award; the other was after he returned a kickoff for a touchdown at Clemson.
Hagans’ 80-yard kickoff return against Wake Forest came after Duke’s lead was cut to 35-25 early in the fourth quarter. Two plays later, running back Nate Sheppard knifed into the end zone for a 13-yard touchdown.
“Another great block by the guys,” Hagans said of what he saw on the return. “Jayden Moore picking up the kicker. Unsung hero Travis Bates, he has the hardest block on that unit. He made a great block and then the gap opened up.”
He has returned 13 kickoffs for 454 yards (34.92 average) this season. That leads the ACC.
Hagans also had a 30-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.
