West Virginia beats Wheeling 80-54

West Virginia defeated Wheeling 80-54 in an Exhibition Sunday afternoon inside the Hope Coliseum.
The Mountaineers rolled out a starting five of center Harlan Obioha, forward Brenen Lorient, guard Treysen Eaglestaff, guard Honor Huff and guard Jasper Floyd.
Obioha led the Mountaineers in scoring with 19 points and 8 rebounds, while Lorient had 14 and ten total players scored.
West Virginia opened the game on a 9-0 run before Wheeling got on the scoreboard with over three minutes in the first half cycling through. But the Cardinals would trim the deficit to 11-6 as the Mountaineers rotated several players into the lineup early in the game.
Obioha had seven of the first 15 points for the Mountaineers displaying some soft touch in the paint.
The Mountaineers would lead 22-12 at the 7:58 mark of the first half with the Mountaineers shooting 50-percent from the floor. West Virginia would then go on a 9-0 run to extend their advantage.
The Cardinals would trim the lead down to 36-17 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half but the home team would take a 41-21 lead into the break.
The Cardinals would open the second half on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to just 15 points forcing an early timeout from the Mountaineers. However, West Virginia regained control and pushed the edge back out over 20 points at 54-31 with 11:57 remaining in the game.
The Mountaineers were cruising up 66-40 with 5:32 left and were able to keep distance for the rest of the game to close out the exhibition win.
West Virginia will open the season Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. Mount St. Mary’s inside the Hope Coliseum.
