Bray Hubbard won Class 6A Mr. Football in 2021. The Alabama commitment, from Ocean Springs High School in Mississippi, won it again on Thursday. Hubbard didn’t realize the winners had been announced until seeing a post via Twitter. He has accounted for 2,930 yards of total offense and 32 touchdowns in 10 games as the starting quarterback, but Hubbard said he was not expecting to win it again.

“It’s definitely an honor especially winning it back-to-back,” Hubbard told BamaInsider shortly after winning the significant award. “It’s just crazy. I can’t thank my coaches and teammates who helped me achieve this goal. I feel very blessed.

“Coach (Blake) Pennock, my head coach, told me as a sophomore that it was going to be my worst year in his offense. I threw four total touchdowns that year. He told me that last year. I threw for 30 touchdowns and ran for 22. He told he saw me having my best year this year.

“I’ve improved a lot. I’ve been in Coach Pennock’s offense for three years. That experience has really helped a lot. I know I can also trust all the guys around me to do what they are supposed to do.”

Brayson Hubbard wants to win for the city

Hubbard will enter the state playoffs on Friday night with a perfect 10-0 record. The Greyhounds will host Northwest Rankin High School.  One goal has been accomplished. The main goal lies ahead.

“There’s no pressure,” he said. “You just push it to the side. One of my goals was definitely to win Mr. Football back-to-back, but I am playing for my teammates, coaches and my city. I want to go out there do my thing and win the first state title game for Ocean Springs.”

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound athlete expects to play on the defensive side of the ball for the Crimson Tide. He is ranked a four-star safety according to the On3 Consensus Player Rankings. He enjoys shining on the offensive side of the ball, but he is one who will play any position needed.

“I am fine with playing defense in college,” he said. “I like having the ball in my hand, but most of the time in high school the best athlete on your team is the quarterback.  You do what you have to do to help the team.”

Bounce back game for Alabama?

Hubbard will not travel north to Oxford this weekend to see his future team. He is excited to see Alabama re-group after its loss to LSU last weekend in Baton Rouge. Hubbard is a member of the No. 1 recruiting class in the country according to the On3 Sports Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings.

“I think it’s gonna be a good one,” Hubbard said. “A good bounce back game for us after the loss last week. I think every player has a chip on their shoulder. They know how high the standards are at Alabama. It will be a good game. Ole Miss is a good team. Alabama is a great team. It will be fun to watch.

“That was just tough losing in OT at LSU. I thought the defense played well. They made a bunch of stops to get the ball back. A lot of three-and-outs. It’s just about execution on both sides. Penalties are also a big part of it. They can definitely be big momentum swingers.”

His mom is still smiling

Courtney Hubbard, who passed away in 2018 from breast cancer, is celebrating her son’s accomplishments once again. Hubbard said, “She’d definitely be smiling and crying (winning back-to-back Mr. Football honors).” He now embarks on a quest for a championship, wearing a pink headband in memory of his mom.

Please consider a donation to Sprinkles of Hope

Courtney Hubbard started a foundation before she died to do what she did best- show love and support for those who are battling cancer each day. Below is the mission statement and how you can donate!

The mission of Sprinkles of Hope is to spread cheer to the patients of Singing River Health System’s Regional Cancer Centers in Ocean Springs and Pascagoula, MS. We help those fighting cancer with acts of love and kindness. Sprinkles of Hope was founded by Courtney Hubbard. While receiving her chemo treatments, she would sit back and observe other patients. Courtney was blessed to always have a family member or friend with her during her treatments.

Often times, she would observe many patients receiving their treatments alone…some by choice, others not. Courtney always asked God to use her journey for Him, and felt like founding Sprinkles of Hope was one way she could be used by Him. As a patient, she was aware of acts of kindness that would brighten the days of fellow fighters. Festive decorations, treats, visits, cards of encouragement and support, music, and conversation mean so much to all patients. Thank you for joining Sprinkles of Hope’s continued efforts to honor Courtney’s legacy by being His hands and feet as we bless countless fighters! Sprinkle HOPE wherever you go!
