If you can believe it, we are officially under the 40-day mark until Alabama is back on a live-game football field. After coming up short in the national championship game against Georgia back in early January, the Crimson Tide will once again be searching for its seventh title under Nick Saban.

This year’s season opener will be against the Utah State Aggies on Sept. 3 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

With today being July 27, that means we are only 38 days away from the return of Alabama football. The team here at BamaOn3 is ready to celebrate every day of the countdown standing between now and the start of football season. Let’s focus on a player — both past and present — who represents — or has represented — the No. 38.

*Note: BamaOn3 is also doing a Countdown to Fall Camp, which is only 8 days away.

Who currently wears the No. 38?

Another day, another two freshmen walk-ons who are wearing the same number for Alabama. Wide receiver Deshawn Samples out of Richland (Wash.) Hanford wears it on offense. Meanwhile, defensive back Marcus Early Jr. out of Warner Robins (Ga.) Peach County represents it for the defense.

Who’s a noteworthy former player to wear it?

Glen Coffee is another one of those pre-Saban arrivals who turned into a fantastic player under the longtime coach’s tutelage. Over his last two seasons, he combined for 2,188 total yards (1,928 rushing, 260 receiving) and 15 touchdowns before being a third-round pick (No. 74 overall) by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2009 NFL Draft.

He saved his most successful college season for his last. In 2008, Coffee rushed for over 1,300 yards and 10 scores en route to being an AP All-SEC First Team selection. Many consider him to be the first “standout” running back during the Saban era.
