Alabama has earned its first commitment for its 2023 recruiting class. On Monday morning, four-star safety Elliot Washington out of Venice (Fla.) made his decision public after visiting Tuscaloosa over the weekend for Junior Day.

Washington’s father, Elliot Sr., is an Alabama legacy who played basketball for former legendary coach Wimp Sanderson back in the early 90s. In other words, the family knows the university extremely well. They’ve also gotten to know Nick Saban even better after his recent visit to Venice High School on Jan. 19.

The timing for Washington’s eventual arrival could not be better.

Alabama is returning both of its starting safeties from the 2021 season in Jordan Battle and DeMarcco Hellams. But with that said, that duo will be seniors this upcoming season, which means they’ll be gone in 2023. Washington could be an important piece in replenishing some of that lost depth.

On3’s own rankings label the 5-foot-11, 187-pound defensive back as the No. 137 player nationally, No. 10 safety and No. 28 player in Florida. That isn’t far off from his On3 Consensus ranking either, which slots him as the No. 140 prospect and the No. 11 safety in the 2022 class.

During his junior season in 2021, Washington produced 54 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and 4 interceptions. He still needs to continue to add weight to his frame, but he can provide plenty of ball skills and playmaking ability on the back half of Alabama’s defense in the future.

Washington has been primarily recruited by running backs coach Robert Gillespie and new cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson.
