Alabama was able to add another member to its now 24-man 2022 recruiting class on National Signing Day. After only being offered two weeks ago, three-star Danny Lewis out of New Iberia (La.) Westgate has committed to the Crimson Tide.

Heading into Wednesday, Lewis was reportedly down to two schools: Alabama and in-state LSU. Florida was also included as an option.

For many, the Tigers were the presumed favorites because Lewis had been committed to Cincinnati until the offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Mike Denbrock left the Bearcats to join Brian Kelly’s staff in Baton Rouge. In the end, that wasn’t enough to sway the big-bodied pass-catcher.

Instead, Lewis will join a class that has two other talented tight ends in four-star signees Amari Niblack and Elijah Brown. All three players bring a slightly different skillset, and they’ll all have an opportunity to work their way into playing time at Alabama.

Lewis is the No. 572 prospect in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He also ranks as the No. 31 tight end and the No. 29 senior prospect in Louisiana.

His On3 recruiting profile lists him at 6-foot-5, 220-pounds, but he’s added mass to his long, athletic frame in recent months. Some even have Lewis as high as 240-250 pounds.

Beginning in 2023, there will likely be an all-out competition between Robbie Ouzts, Caden Clark and the three incoming freshmen once Cameron Latu moves on to the NFL. And while Lewis is the lowest-rated of the bunch, he’s still an upside, development player the coaching staff likes.

Stay tuned for more recruiting updates throughout the day from Bama On3.
