Alabama running back Camar Wheaton has entered the transfer portal. The news comes exactly one week after the story broke that the freshman ball-carrier was no longer included in the school’s student directory and had not been with the team.

In other words, Wheaton entering the portal today shouldn’t come as a surprise.

Despite a slew of season-ending injuries in 2021, there’s obviously been a logjam at running back this offseason. Jase McClellan and Roydell Williams are both expected back. Plus, Trey Sanders will be another year removed from a severe car accident in 2020.

Add in Georgia Tech transfer Jahmyr Gibbs and two highly-rated freshmen in Emmanuel Henderson and Jamarion Miller, both top-100 prospects, there are still six quality runners ready to contribute — as long as nothing else changes.

Through no fault of his own, Wheaton’s lone season in Tuscaloosa was underwhelming. The former Lakeview Centennial (Tex.) standout saw any chance at early playing time come to an end when he suffered a meniscus injury before the season.

Back in early November, coach Nick Saban gave an update regarding Wheaton. Despite early reports causing many to believe Wheaton’s injury wouldn’t sideline him long, that initial belief ended up being wrong.

“Camar Wheaton’s still rehabbing,” Saban said before the LSU game. “He’s not on the field yet. He’s got a ways to go.”

He’s obviously a talented player. Coming out of high school, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound running back was rated as the No. 41 player nationally, No. 4 running back and No. 8 player in Texas, according to the On3 Consensus rankings.

On3’s Transfer Portal Rankings have Wheaton listed as its No. 10 running back and No. 65 player overall. Despite not getting any playing time in his one season in Tuscaloosa, he’ll likely still be a valued target for several teams.

The news of Wheaton officially entering the transfer portal was first broke by On3 senior national college football reporter Matt Zenitz. Stay tuned for updates on where the younger running back ends up.
