Bill O’Brien and the rest of Alabama’s staff once again recruited well at the quarterback position in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

A class after signing No. 2 overall quarterback Ty Simpson, the program added a pair of top-11 signal callers this year. Behind strong recruiting efforts for both players, the Crimson Tide are adding Dylan Lonergan and Eli Holstein to their roster next season.

Holstein arrived for bowl practice last week, with Lonergan officially putting pen to paper on Wednesday, which is the first day of Early Signing Period.

Lonergan’s recruitment was interesting as South Carolina was favored to land him heading into the summer. The commitment from Holstein to Alabama on May 24 did not seem to bode well for the Tide in their pursuit of Lonergan, with him admitting that he initially had hesitations about the staff’s plan for a two-quarterback class.

Things changed for Bama, however, during Lonergan’s official visit to Tuscaloosa the first weekend of June. South Carolina would get him on campus for an official that month, but Lonergan wound up choosing Alabama on July 11.

Lonergan, who has not yet decided if he will enroll early or not, is going to play baseball and football at the next level.

Future Alabama QB Dylan Lonergan‘s Signing Profile

Name: Dylan Lonergan

Position: Quarterback

Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 220 pounds

High school and hometown: Brookwood High in Snellville (Ga.)

On3 Consensus Rankings: No. 146 overall/No. 11 quarterback/No. 10 in Georgia

Why Lonergan chose Alabama (Full Story HERE): “The overall who they’ve been for the last 10 to 15 years and what the coaches have sold me on. They’ve really made a jump in recruiting me these last few weeks. The word that stuck out to me was ‘need’. They kept saying they needed me. That really stuck out to me. I took that to heart.”

Brookwood head coach, Philip Jones, on Lonergan’s skill set (Full Story HERE): “When you talk about his arm talent, he can make all the throws and has an extremely strong arm. I think the best quality is like the Bill Walsh thing; it’s his catchability. He’s able to throw with such touch. He’s not a guy who tries to wow you with his arm strength, even though he can. Much more committed to making the accurate throws. Everything he throws is catchable.

“His hand-eye coordination and overall motor skills are just impressive. He’s perfect. Everything he does is just perfect.”

On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power’s analysis of Lonergan (Full Story HERE): “I think Dylan Lonergan is just a well-rounded quarterback who shows some good signs as far as being able to process and play fast. He’s kind of a natural in terms of adjusting to the speed of the game and I think playing against top competition in a high classification in Georgia certainly helps that as well.

“He’s one of the better quarterbacks in the country and in this cycle. I’m looking forward to seeing how he plays as a senior. Given how he looked as a junior and the improvement he showed, I would not be surprised if he has a strong senior season.”
