Depth Chart Projections – WR(X)

StarterTy Simpson OR Jalen Milroe
Third StringDylan Lonergan* OR Eli Holstein*

Our thoughts: As I’ve said in previous depth chart projections, there really isn’t much of a difference between the X and Z receivers. Honestly, that also goes for the H (or the slot) too, as Alabama likes to move guys around in order to create mismatches. The way I list them is based on how their size and physical abilities fit into those traditional terms.

Brooks is built like a prototypical X receiver.

At 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, the now junior is the biggest player at his position. Don’t mistake that size for limitations, however. He continues to grow as a route-runner, which was made evident in a recent tweet I made highlighting freshman safety Caleb Downs. Watch what Brooks (No. 7) does to cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry (No. 1) here:

We should note that McKinstry is widely considered one of — if not — the best cornerbacks in all of college football. It’s not just that play though. Throughout his career, we’ve seen Brooks make plays in big-time moments. We’ve also seen him make the tough catches. An example of that is shown in the clip below:

Brooks is known for being a hard worker. With his talent, we should’ve known that he’d continue to get better and better. Can he be Alabama’s top receiver this fall? That remains to be seen, but we’re confident that he’s a better player today than he was even on New Year’s Eve against Kansas State. I’m excited to see what his junior year holds.

Burton is a guy I have slipping down the depth chart a little bit.

I still think he’s going to be in the rotation, but he might not be a starter. The one thing he can’t do is exactly what we saw from him on Saturday, which is drop footballs. He doesn’t provide the game-breaking ability of a Jameson Williams or Julio Jones. Those guys could afford to drop an occasional pass. Burton’s top calling cards have to be his reliability and consistency.

He’s still growing in those areas.
