Some key Gators targets were in Gainesville on Thursday for Florida‘s first spring practice of 2024.

One of them was local product and Newberry (Fla.) defensive lineman, Jarquez Carter.

The On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, labels Carter the 33rd-ranked defensive lineman and 388th-ranked prospect overall.

”I actually made a surprise pop up. It was kind of a surprise to everyone because they didn’t know I was coming. I made a surprise pop up for practice,” Carter told Gators Online.

“(Defensive line) coach (Gerald) Chatman definitely impressed me. I definitely loved the way he was coaching. He had a lot of energy and made practice more fun to watch. I know the players had fun just being out there.

“Just the coaching staff and what they’ve been doing trying to rebuild the team, you can see a lot has changed for the better.”

Former Memphis transfer Cam Jackson, who recorded 32 tackles (18 solo) and two pass deflections in 2023, is one player Carter monitored closely on Thursday.

As for his personal fit, however, the Gators covet Carter’s versatility and would also utilize him as a pass rusher.

“For him being able to move at that size, the program is doing a lot to help big guys like him and Desmond Watson move real good for their size,” said Carter.

“Also, (Tyreak) Sapp, No. 94, he is more my size and sticking with the big guys, using speed to his advantage.”

Carter squeezed in some face time with the staff

Once practice wrapped up, Carter was able to connect with multiple coaches before hitting the road.

Among those who made sure to see him were Billy Napier and Gerald Chatman.

“I think they were surprised because I popped up. I live right nearby and wanted to come by for the first practice to see how everything was,” said Carter. “They said they were happy I came and that they love me and keep putting in the work; just asking how I’m doing and stuff like that.”

Numerous schools will get a fair shot

Although Florida is the local school and already holds an On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine pick, Carter plans to visit over a handful of schools this spring.

Those also on the schedule and making a strong impression include Miami, Tennessee, Ohio State, Florida State, USC, Alabama, UCF and Colorado.

“I’ll say they’re up there,” Carter said of the Gators. “I really don’t have top schools, but they are a school I’m visiting and trying to take an OV too. They’re up there.”
