Florida Gators finish 5th in Learfield Directors' Cup  standings

The overall strength of the Florida Gators athletic program was again on full display during the 2022-23 sports calendar.

The Gators won national titles in men’s golf and men’s outdoor track and field. Meanwhile, the Florida baseball team was national runners-up at the College World Series.

In the end, the Gators finished a solid fifth in the Learfield Directors’ Cup  standings.

Stanford, which yet again displayed balance across the board, claimed the title for the 26th time.

The official release for the Director’s Cup noted the following of the Cardinal: “Stanford claimed three national titles – men’s gymnastics, women’s rowing and women’s water polo – while also tallying five top-3 finishes (women’s swimming and diving, women’s golf, softball, women’s tennis, and men’s outdoor track and field). Overall, Stanford scored in three of four countable sports, along with 15 additional total sports. The following scores were removed – women’s cross country and soccer, women’s gymnastics, men’s indoor track and field, wrestling, women’s outdoor track and field, and fencing – due to the maximum additional sports to be counted is 15.”

Stanford finished with 1412.00 total points. Texas was next at 1370.50 points, followed by Ohio State ( 1170.75), Virginia (1105.50) and Florida (1091.50 points). Florida also placed fifth in the 2021-2022 athletic cycle.

Other Florida highlights:

 -Gymnastics placed second at nationals.

-Women’s outdoor track and field was No. 2.

-Men’s indoor track and field took third. So did women’s Indoor track and field.

-Men’s swimming was No. 6.

The Gators led the SEC (again)

The Southeastern Conference led all Division I conferences with eight schools in the top 25: Florida Gators (5th), Tennessee (6th), Georgia (7th), LSU (9th), Alabama (12th), Arkansas (13th), Kentucky (18th) and Texas A&M (24th).

Learfield Directors’ Cup scoring method

Per the official website of the Learfield Directors’ Cup, scoring is measured as follows:

Overall, 19 sports are counted in the final DI standings, four of which must be women’s volleyball and basketball and men’s basketball and baseball. The next highest (15 max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings.

The LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in NCAA Championships.
