The SEC announced their players of the week on Monday, and Georgia tight end Brock Bowers took home the conference’s recognition as Freshman of the Week. Against Vanderbilt this past weekend, Bowers caught four passes for 69 yards, both team-highs. He found the end zone twice through the air. Bowers also had one rush on a jet sweep, taking that 12-yards to the house for seven.

In doing so, Bowers became the first Georgia player to score both on the ground and through the air in the first quarter of a game since Todd Gurley in 2013 against Florida. Ladd McConkey did the same soon thereafter, bringing in a 12-yard pass from JT Daniels before taking a reverse 24 yards for another score.

Bowers has become the talking point of plenty of conversations in Athens early in 2021. The Napa, Calif. native has led the team in receptions each of the first four games and has the lead for both yards and touchdowns as well. Overall, he’s hauled in 18 passes for 272 yards and four scores.

Background on Brock Bowers

“He was an interesting recruitment,” Smart said about Bowers earlier this season. “We recruited him, his mom, his dad, his sister — his whole family. They’re a wonderful family. His mom was a tremendous athlete, his dad was a football player. He’s a great story. Every time I talked to him, I probably talked to him once every two weeks, (Todd) Hartley probably talked to him every day, we just felt like we had a special player. And once we got him, we realized it. This young man played tailback. Coach (Todd) Monken spent a lot of time on Zoom, showing him the way that he could be used and that we’d utilize his talents.”

“We need tight ends like him to be elite,” he added. “We have to have more guys like him. I mean, there’s guys out there across the country like him that we have to get in order to be elite at the tight end position. He’s become a really good weapon, and I don’t think people respect his ability to block because he packs a powerful punch and he’s tough. He’s a big weapon for us, and I’m proud of his humility.”

Georgia takes on Arkansas this weekend in Athens. The Bulldogs come in at No. 2 in both the Coaches and AP Polls. Meanwhile, the Razorbacks come in as high as No. 8 in the country according to the AP Poll. Kickoff will be at 12:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
