Georgia vs Auburn: what Munson would've worried about

Another year, another round of Georgia vs Auburn in October. I still don’t care too much for that, as a SEC traditionalist.

At least the game kicks off at 3:30 and Georgia gets a nice afternoon for the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry in a much-needed conference home game.

Ya know, when I started this weekly column about what Larry Munson would’ve worried about, the first thing I though about was all those Auburn moments he had behind the microphone.

The Sugar Falling Out of the Sky in 1982 obviously has its place in College Football lore, not just Georgia’s.

I turned into a puddle on the floor in real-time when I heard him yell, “Touchdown! Touchdown! My God a Touchdown! In the corner! Was it Watson or Gibson? We’re going to put glasses on it.”

I heard hiim beg Old Lady Luck for a little help in an all-timer in 2005.

(She didn’t listen.)

Munson was all over Georgia vs Auburn, and he didn’t leave it unscathed.

Listen to this fantastic story about bourbon and coke to get your mind right.

After that, here’s my respectful take on how Munson’s pessimism may have gotten the better of him this weekend.

Can you believe those pencil pushers out in Vegas has Georgia as a four touchdown-favorite vs Auburn you guys?

We haven’t looked particularly good the past two weeks.

I don’t know what they’re seeing, myself. But they’re placing their faith in us like nobody’s business.

We dropped down to number two behind Alabama, and I was glad to see it.

I wished they’d drop us down a few more spots, to be honest. These young pups may be reading their own press clippings too much.

We played better when we weren’t on the top of the heap, if you remember correctly.

But that Oregon game there in Atlanta seems like it was a hundred thousand days ago. Where have those guys been since then?

Well, it isn’t too hard to figure out.

We’re banged up and young and I think we’ve played some pretty good teams that no one wants to respect.

And now we’ve gotta play Auburn in October

All kinds of weird things are happening now, you guys.

Auburn in Athens in an even year, when for all those games back since the 1800’s, it was the other way around.

It isn’t Halloween yet, you guys but this one’s got me feeling pretty spooked.

It just doesn’t feel right in my bones. Auburn and Georgia are supposed to play in November, when it’s cool, and my cigar smoke doesn’t hang quite as thick in the late autumn air.

But now, I’m just sitting in a humid cloud of this Dominican, and like the smoke, this feeling that Auburn may be bringing us their best shot won’t leave me alone.

Don’t forget their head coach, Bryan Harsin, seems to be in a lot of trouble you guys

You may overlook that and think this thing is a slam-dunk.

But I did some Hawks broadcasts back in the day, and I can’t help but wonder if he’s about to Dikembe Mutumbo this thing right back in our faces.

You saw at Missouri what happens when a team has nothing to lose.

Bryan Harsin fits that bill and I don’t feel too good about it you guys.

But if there’s one thing I can appreciate, it’s people doubting the Dawgs

One of their big offensive linemen, the center, gave us some bulletin board material it seems.

I don’t know how much that stuff matters, but maybe it gives us the spark we need.

And another guy went on one of his podcasts or whatever ya call it this week, and I heard he said he’d rather have Florida’s quarterback, Anthony Richardson, than our guy, Stetson Bennett.

I think Richardson has more tackles than some of our guys do, with all those interceptions he’s thrown.

So if you’re talking defense, then yeah, I’d rather have Florida’s guy at linebacker or cornerback than Bennett.

But I think Stetson may just have something to say about people thinking he can’t get the job done, and Auburn is a good place to start.

But then again, maybe they’re right.
