Breaking down expectations at LSU for Bryce Underwood

LSU has landed a commitment from 5-star+ quarterback Bryce Underwood, giving the Tigers a verbal pledge from the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2025 class.

With the addition, LSU moved past Georgia and Ohio State for the No. 1 class on the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings for the 2025 cycle.

Underwood is the nation’s highest-ranked prospect as a 5-star on all the major recruiting services.

With eight total commitments, including two more 5-star commitments in running back Harlem Berry and wide receiver Dakorien Moore, the Tigers are off to the fastest start of any college football team for the 2025 class.

From there, LSU has stacked up Louisiana four-star recruits in University High linebacker Keylan Moses, Sulphur tight end JD LaFleur, New Orleans Isidore Newman interior offensive lineman Brett Bordelon and New Orleans Edna Karr wide receiver TaRon Francis, with each checking in as On3’s highest-ranked prospect at their position in Louisiana. Loganville (Ga.) Grayson three-star cornerback Jaylen Bell rounds out the seven-man commitment list.

Underwood gives LSU one of the biggest commits in program history

With Bryce Underwood on board, the Tigers managed to go to Michigan and land not just America’s top prospect, but one of the best quarterback prospects over the past decade.

On3 Director of Scouting and Recruiting Charles Power broke down the addition with his thoughts on Underwood’s impact at LSU.

“Any time you land the top quarterback, but also a top quarterback who is the No. 1 overall prospect in a cycle, it’s program-changing addition,” Power said. “He’s a franchise-type prospect. His combination of upside and on-field resume makes for a player who not only has a potential to make an early impact in college, but has a lot of room for development. The talent can ultimately be a game-changer in Baton Rouge, and then a high NFL Draft pick.

“When you look at what LSU is assembling in 2025, he’s the crown jewel of what looks to be a phenomenal early start for the Tigers. Pairing him with the elite skill talent LSU is bringing in puts LSU in position to compete at the highest level once those guys get to campus. It’s safe to say LSU is recruiting at a National Championship-level. They have done well on offense, and if they can get the defense right, LSU will be a problem in the SEC and on the national scene if they continue on this trajectory.”

The On3 Scouting Summary

On3’s Scouting and Rankings team’s take on Underwood as a prospect:

“The early top quarterback prospect in the 2025 cycle. A top arm talent and plus athlete who is among the more physically-gifted quarterback prospects in recent cycles. Measured at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds with a 10-inch hand the spring after his sophomore season. Owns a big-time arm with the ability to drive the ball with velocity to all levels of the field. Throws a very tight spiral that amplifies the velocity on the tail of his passes. Has shown advanced nuance and skill as a passer early on. Comfortable delivering over the middle of the field from within the pocket.

… Consistently sticks the ball on receivers against tight coverage. Shows the ability to layer passes with touch and high-level location. Doubles as a run threat with the ability to make defenders miss and pull away at the second level. Has a 27-1 record as as a starter over the first two years of his high school career, leading his school to back-to-back state titles. Completed 65% of his passes for 2,751 yards and 37 touchdowns as a sophomore. Also rushed for 642 yards and eight scores. Very young for the cycle with an August birthday and could technically be a 2026 prospect. Has considerable physical upside and room for continued growth.”
