There was a spot at the table and a Miami-themed cake ready for Five-Star Plus+ Miami cornerback commit Cormani McClain at his school’s signing ceremony this morning. But there’s always some signing day drama, and for Miami it was with McClain. He will not sign with the Hurricanes today in a bout of signing-day drama, his mother announced on Twitter.

You could say that when it comes to McClain and Miami, at least for now, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

“FALSE ALARM!!!” his mother, Kaishay, said in a Twitter post. “THERE WILL BE NO SIGNING FOR (Cormani) TODAY…. SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE!!!”

Cormani, a 6-foot-1.5, 160-pound cornerback and the No. 3 overall recruit in the country, has been committed to Miami since Oct. 27. Rumors emerged earlier in December that he may flip from Miami, but he reaffirmed his commitment, saying ““I’m not going anywhere. I don’t know where they got that from. They’re wildin’ out.”

Florida is rumored to be making a late push for Cormani, who he has visited multiple times and was originally projected to commit to by On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine. Colorado is also rumored to be in the mix for Cormani and that he has had contact with the Buffaloes.

More information on when McClain may sign was not provided in Kaishay’s tweet.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal visited McClain in-home Dec. 9, and Kaishay tweeted a photo of her, Cormani and Cristobal smiling with the caption, “The smiles on our faces explains this visit!!! Thank you,” and tagged Cristobal and Cormani.

He is the first of Miami’s expected early signees to announce he will not sign his letter of intent Dec. 21. The Canes have already had 16 signees put pen to paper and commit themselves to Miami, including five-star offensive tackle Samson Okunlola.

CaneSport will continue to monitor this situation as it develops.
