For those outside of Miami’s football facility, it was a surprise when former Georgia commit Ny Carr named the Hurricanes as one of his top schools after decommitting from the Bulldogs. But Miami receivers coach Kevin Beard had quietly been building his relationship with Carr for months before Carr made the decision to decommit, which ultimately paid off when Carr signed with the Hurricanes today.

Beard first began contacting Carr this summer while the four-star receiver, currently listed as the country’s No. 51 overall prospect, was still committed to Georgia, and the two quickly developed a rapport. Carr eventually decommitted from the Bulldogs in late September, and tight ends coach Cody Woodiel visited his school the next day. Carr named Miami his new frontrunner by the end of the week, placing the Hurricanes ahead of Florida State, Florida and Auburn, and set up an unofficial campus visit for Miami’s Oct. 7 home game against Georgia Tech.

Carr committed just after his first visit to Miami, citing his comfortability in Coral Gables and enthusiasm about playing for head coach Mario Cristobal. He immediately shut down his recruitment as well, later telling CaneSport nothing short of an entire coaching staff overhaul would get the 5-foot-10.5, 170-pound wideout to reopen his recruitment.

“I felt like I could be the one who could come in, kind of take over the offense and be the face of it,” Carr said. “That’s my plan. (The coaches), they did really well to make me feel wanted. All of the coaches have good energy. I like how I vibe with the coaches. I like how they interact with their players. I want to go to a school I can always come back to after I graduate.”

Carr was also adamant Miami’s losses this year aren’t indicative of where the program is or the direction the Hurricanes are trending.

“Losses don’t define who they are,” Carr said. “Every team is going to lose in a crazy type of way. Look at how Notre Dame lost (to Ohio State earlier this year). Losing is not the thing that I look at, because I’m not going to get to the league off of wins and losses. That really doesn’t matter to me. But I feel like moving forward they’re going to fix their mistakes. Losses don’t define you.”

Carr will be an early enrollee and will participate in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio in early January.

CaneSport’s Take

Carr has a similar playing style to current Hurricane wideout Jacolby George, but he potentially has a higher ceiling. Carr’s commitment also gave Miami three top-125 receivers for the first time since 2008, the last time the Canes landed three four-star wideouts.
