Former Michigan State TE Maliq Carr transferring to Houston

East Lansing, Mich. – Former Michigan State tight end Maliq Carr announced on Monday afternoon that he is transferring to the University of Houston. Carr, Michigan State’s second-leading pass catcher in 2023 with 30 receptions, entered the portal on Dec. 9.

Carr has said on social media that, after his initial meetings with members of Michigan State’s new coaching staff, that he was encouraged to find a new university and football program. 

Carr also visited South Florida.

Carr (6-6, 260, Inkster, Mich./Oak Park High) will be a redshirt-senior this fall. He had 30 catches for 352 yards in 2023, and tied for the team lead with three touchdowns. 

He played in 10 games in 2023 with six starts. He missed two games with what was termed an undisclosed injury.

Carr’s high point of the season, and his time at Michigan State, came during a victory over Indiana on Nov. 18 when he had seven catches for 117 yards, the most by a Spartan tight end since Dion Sims had 122 yards against Eastern Michigan in 2012.

Carr had TD receptions of 17 and 36 yards against Indiana, earning him Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors.

One week later, Carr was Michigan State’s most effective player in an otherwise dreadful loss to Penn State at Ford Field. Carr had four catches for 34 yards against the Nittany Lions.
