EAST LANSING, Mich. – One day after Michigan State announced it would part ways with Alan Haller, the outgoing athletic director released a letter through his attorneys that addressed the Spartan community.

Haller expressed pride in his accomplishments and referenced decisions that didn’t always align with those he worked with.

“Throughout my career, I have consistently spoken up when I believed something was not right – always guided by a commitment to protect students and uphold the best interests of the University,” Haller wrote. “At times, those decisions have not aligned with individuals in positions of significant influence.

“Although I am deeply saddened to be leaving the University, I am proud of my record and the lasting impact of my work.”

Sources tell SpartanMag that Haller’s lack of vision and strength in the name, image and licensing fundraising space damaged his support internally among department coaches and administrators, and ultimately donors.

Michigan State hired Haller on Sept. 1, 2021. The former Spartan football player, track athlete and police officer oversaw the hirings of hockey coach Adam Nightingale and women’s basketball coach Robyn Fralick, among others. Both Nightingale and Fralick have experienced varying levels of success in rebuilding their respective programs.

“Serving as Vice President and Director of Athletics at Michigan State University has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” Haller wrote. “For 32 years, I have been a Spartan – first as a student-athlete in track and football, then as a Police Officer, and later in various leadership roles within Spartan athletics.

“To the student-athletes: THANK YOU for allowing me the privilege of serving as your athletic director. It has been an incredible journey – and yes, it has been FUN! Supporting your success has never been just a job; it was my responsibility and my joy to help create an environment where you could thrive and become the best version of yourself.”

Haller hired football coach Jonathan Smith in the winter of 2023 after navigating the departure of former coach Mel Tucker amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Haller also oversaw the planning and construction of the 65,000-square-foot, $67.75 Tom Izzo Football Building, which was an addition to and renovation of the Skandalaris Football Center and Duffy Daugherty Football Building.

On April 12, the Michigan State Board of Trustees voted 6-1-1 to approve the construction of a 6,000-seat arena for Spartan volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling, as part of A $150 million project termed “The Spartan Gateway District” at the corner of South Harrison and Trowbridge Roads.

“I am deeply grateful to my colleagues who stood alongside me,” Haller wrote. “Together, we navigated some of the most difficult challenges in our history and celebrated some of our most meaningful victories. Leading Spartan Athletics through both has been a highlight of my professional life.

“My parents taught me that our actions should always be motivated by love. Serving this University and this community has been, for me, an act of love.

“I remain a proud Spartan. Goodbye Michigan State. Always and forever – Go Green!”

Haller’s last day will be May 11. Deputy athletic director Jennifer Smith and Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo will serve as co-interim athletic directors while a formal search is conducted to find a replacement.
