Michigan State starting tight end Maliq Carr has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Carr—who originally signed with Purdue in 2020—transferred into the Spartan program prior to the 2021 season.

The Inkster, Mich., native was the Spartans’ second-leading receiver this season, hauling in 30 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns. Carr has 54 total receptions, 686 yards and five touchdowns in 34 career games.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound junior featured in 10 games for Michigan State in 2023. Carr missed the Spartans’ matchups with Nebraska and Minnesota due to disciplinary reasons. He returned for the final three games of the season and was named captain for the season finale against Penn State.

The former four-star prospect was the No. 176-ranked recruit in the nation, the No. 31-ranked tight end and the No. 5-ranked prospect in Michigan, according to the 2020 On3 Industry Rankings.

Carr is one of 21 Michigan State players in the portal. He joins quarterback Katin Houser, cornerback Charles Brantley, guard Kevin Wigenton, tackle Ethan Boyd, quarterback Sam Leavitt, wide receiver Christian Fitzpatrick, quarterback Noah Kim, receiver Tyrell Henry, guard Geno VanDeMark, tight end Evan Morris, defensive end Khris Bogle, defensive tackle Dre Butler, guard Kristian Phillips, wide receiver Sebastian Brown, defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, punter Michael O’Shaughnessy, running back Jordon Simmons, defensive back Justin White, defensive end Zion Young and tackle Brandon Baldwin.

Linebacker Darius Snow entered the portal on Monday, but withdrew on Wednesday. Offensive tackle Spencer Brown committed to Oklahoma on Wednesday, while long snapper Hank Pepper committed to USC on Wednesday.
