The spring transfer portal window does not officially begin until April 16th. But Mississippi State is already active in the portal and the Bulldogs added a big piece to the 2024 offensive attack on Saturday.

Former Miami of Ohio running back Rashad Amos announced his intentions to transfer to Mississippi State on Saturday. In doing so the Sandy Creek (Ga.) High School product becomes State’s first spring transfer commitment.

“I just love the campus,” Amos explained of his decision. “Just being in the SEC again and the staff made me feel comfortable and at home. I love the coaches there and I like what they are doing at Mississippi State.”

The 6-foot-2 and 234-pound Amos began his college career at South Carolina before transferring to Miami of Ohio last year. He will be a redshirt junior in the upcoming season with two seasons of eligibility remaining. Amos is rated as the nation’s No. 19 transfer running back by On3 composite rankings in this year’s cycle.

Last season at Miami of Ohio, Amos had 210 carries for 1,075 yards and 13 touchdowns along with six receptions for 37 yards. Amos began his Mississippi State official visit on Thursday before leaving campus Saturday. He talked of his time with head coach Jeff Lebby and his opportunity in Starkville.

“I had a really good time on my official visit and everybody treated me well,” recalled Amos. “The whole staff treated me great. Me and Coach Lebby had a good conversation and he said I would fit in good in the program. He likes the way I fit their offense and believes I can be good there.”

During his stay in Starkville, Amos mentioned that he spent the majority of his time with the Bulldogs’ staff. But on Saturday he was able to meet one of State’s top performers from last year’s squad.

“I did get to hang out with Bookie (Nathaniel Watson), who played linebacker there, on the last day of my visit,” Amos added. “But I was mostly with the coaches the whole time and I was not around many of the players. I was just with the coaches most of the time.”

Amos is set to enroll at Mississippi State this summer and will immediately look to fill a major need for the 2024 season. This spring the Bulldogs only had three scholarship running backs on the roster – seniors Keyvone Lee and Jeffery Pittman along with former juco transfer Johnnie Daniels, a 2024 signee. Also on the roster is Seth Davis, who had a solid true freshman campaign in 2023 but is still rehabbing from a major knee injury suffered in last year’s Egg Bowl.

Once he arrives on campus, Amos has confidence that he can fill that major need for the Bulldogs and have a successful return to the SEC.

“I think I am a really good fit for the offense,” noted Amos. “It’s a good fit being an SEC running back. I think I can take on the load and I know what it takes to be in a good offense. And I think Mississippi State is going to have a good offense.”

On the other side of the transfer portal. Mississippi State has had one player announce his intentions to transfer after the spring. Earlier this month redshirt freshman defensive lineman Caleb Bryant noted of his plans to leave State’s program.
