Nebraska baseball drops series finale to Rutgers, 7-5

Nebraska baseball (14-18, 4-8 Big Ten) came up short Sunday, falling 7-5 to Rutgers in the series finale at Haymarket Park. The Huskers were aiming for a sweep after earning their first conference series win of the season, but couldn’t complete the job.
Rutgers starter Quinn Berglin, making his first start of the year, kept the Nebraska bats quiet early. The Huskers managed just one run on three hits through the first five innings. Berglin’s final line: 5.0 innings, five hits, two earned runs and the win.

Nebraska didn’t get to Berglin until the sixth, when Cayden Brumbaugh led off with a single and Tyler Stone followed with an RBI double. After the game, head coach Will Bolt expressed frustration with his team’s lack of competitiveness at the plate — particularly in at-bats against Berglin.
Pitching and response innings prove costly for Huskers
Jackson Brockett took the loss for the Huskers, going 4.1 innings and allowing three earned runs on seven hits. The bullpen didn’t fare much better. Gavin Blachowicz followed and gave up one earned run in just 0.2 innings. Caleb Clark and Drew Christo combined to allow two more Rutgers runs over the next two innings.

One recurring issue: Nebraska couldn’t post a scoreless frame after putting runs on the board. After scoring in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, the Huskers allowed Rutgers to immediately respond each time. The Scarlet Knights outhit Nebraska 15-9 on the day and were led by Brennen Hyde, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Nebraska now heads into another critical road stretch. The Huskers face Kansas on Tuesday before traveling to Iowa City for a pivotal Big Ten series against the Hawkeyes. With the race to make the Big Ten Tournament heating up, every conference game down the stretch will carry weight.
