Nebraska tops Holy Cross 4-1 to stay alive in Chapel Hill Regional

Nebraska (33-28) defeated Holy Cross (31-27) 4-1 on Saturday in the second game of the Chapel Hill Regional, thanks to a stellar start from Ty Horn and timely power hitting.
Horn delivered his second consecutive standout performance, pitching 7 1/3 innings and allowing just one earned run. He struck out six batters and walked only one. After Holy Cross opened the game with a leadoff double and a single, Horn responded by inducing a popup to shortstop Dylan Carey and a strikeout. The Huskers’ defense then executed a flawless first-and-third play to catch a runner in a pickle and escape the jam.
Horn’s only blemish was a leadoff solo home run in the fifth inning, giving Holy Cross a 1-0 lead.

Brumbaugh and Helligso provide key offensive Spark
Nebraska answered immediately in the bottom half. Devin Nunez, who finished with four hits, doubled down the left-field line. Cayden Brumbaugh, who had struggled in the regional, followed with a no-doubt two-run homer over the left-field wall to give the Huskers a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, Hogan Helligso added to Nebraska’s lead with a solo home run to left. He later contributed an RBI single in the eighth, scoring Rhett Stokes, who had doubled. Stokes also made a highlight-reel play at third base earlier in the game, fielding a bunt with his bare hand and throwing the runner out at first.

Luke Broderick entered in relief in the eighth to record the final five outs. He escaped a bases-loaded jam with a critical 6-4-3 double play to end the eighth inning unscathed.
Nebraska will face the loser of Saturday night’s game between Oklahoma and North Carolina in another elimination game at 11 a.m. CT Sunday. Fans will hope for a matchup against North Carolina, but the Huskers will need to win three straight games, including beating the winner of Saturday night’s contest twice. Will Walsh is expected to start Sunday, and Nebraska’s bullpen remains in good shape with all arms available.
