COLUMBUS – Ohio State has landed its second defensive line commit in its 2023 class: Jason Moore picked the Buckeyes on Sunday.

Moore, a four-star defensive lineman from DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, Maryland), announced his commitment on social media, picking the Buckeyes over Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan and other top programs.

Notre Dame was the long-time leader per the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, but Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson secured Moore to pair alongside fellow Buckeyes commit Will Smith Jr. in the 2023 class.

Jason Moore took two visits to Columbus, with his most recent as an official visit on June 24. The Buckeyes hosted several other defensive players including fellow Maryland edge rusher Desmond Umeozulu and four-star Florida defensive tackle John Walker.

At 6-foot-6, 260-pounds, Moore is the No. 1 overall player in the state of Maryland and the No. 5 overall defensive lineman across the country, according to the On3 consensus rankings. While officially listed as a pure defensive lineman, Moore’s current size gives Johnson and the Buckeyes some versatility with his placement along the defensive front.

Moore’s first visit to Ohio State was during its spring game on April 16, when he and Johnson quickly established the relationship the Buckeyes are always after in recruiting.

“I spent some time with coach Larry Johnson,” Moore told Lettermen Row after the visit. “It’s always great sitting down and talking to him. He’s just intense and straight-forward every time we talk. I learn something new every time I speak to him whether it’s about football or in life.”

Moore is the first DeMatha Catholic prospect to commit to Ohio State since former Buckeyes superstar defensive end Chase Young back in 2017. Moore joins a strong and growing defensive class, spearheaded by cornerbacks Dijon Johnson and Kayin Lee.

Moore becomes commitment No. 18 in Ohio State’s 2023 class, which has now surpassed Notre Dame for the top spot in the national team rankings.
