The summer offseason is in full swing, and Lettermen Row is trying to survive it with our annual Position Week breakdowns. By the time all nine units and coaching staff at Ohio State have been covered, training camp and media days will nearly have arrived, and the return of football in the Horseshoe will be just around the corner. We’re kicking off our positional weeks with the most important position on the field: quarterbacks.

COLUMBUS — The Ohio State quarterback competition yielded good results in spring practice, even if head coach Ryan Day wasn’t able to name a starter by the end of the 15 practice periods.

The Buckeyes enter the summer without a clear-cut leader of the offense, the locker room and the program from their premier position. But that doesn’t mean spring practice was a failure. Both quarterbacks in the competition, third-year signal-caller Kyle McCord and second-year quarterback Devin Brown, certainly took big steps forward in their development since the end of last season.

“Devin’s definitely making me better,” McCord said during spring ball. “And I think vice versa as well. So, you know, even though there’s not a winner of the job yet, I think that benefits both of us, honestly. It’s going to push both of us going into fall camp. And there’s still a lot of time until the season. Just keeping each other hungry, I think he’d say the same thing. So I think that’s definitely the wise thing to do at this point, you know, just keeping each other in check, keeping each other going.”

Lettermen Row is recapping everything that was written, talked about and learned from a busy Quarterback Week, as we finish up the deep dive on the Buckeyes signal-callers before moving on to next week’s position and dive into Running Backs Week.

Projected depth chart

Projected starter: Kyle McCord

The Ohio State quarterback competition remains a race headed by Kyle McCord, who just wrapped up his third spring under Ryan Day and Corey Dennis. … McCord still hasn’t locked up the starting job just yet, but we’re penciling him in as the starter because he didn’t do anything to lose that job in spring ball. With a full summer left to prepare, the bet is on McCord to be the starting quarterback come September.

Projected backup: Devin Brown

Projecting McCord as the starter isn’t at all a knock on Devin Brown, yet another former five-star quarterback who, at times, wowed the coaching staff in spring practice. Brown has already spent one offseason learning the Ohio State offense, so he didn’t spend the spring too far behind McCord. …

Why Buckeyes were smart to hold off on naming a starter in spring

Ohio State coach Ryan Day was comfortable mapping out an ideal timeline for the Buckeyes quarterback battle before spring began.

In a perfect world, Day wanted to have a starter named prior to summer workouts.

Fast forward to the end of April, neither Kyle McCord nor Devin Brown ’emerged’ enough to earn the status of the Ohio State starter.

That’s not to say spring practice wasn’t productive for the Buckeyes. It certainly was, especially as a time for McCord and Brown to learn and grow. And although a decision won’t likely be made until the middle of August in training camp, Ohio State saw real progress from both quarterbacks as they worked with the first- and second-team offense. …
