Penn State has picked up three new commitments in the past three days, all of whom are at the wide receiver position. Following the addition of Tyseer Denmark on Wednesday, the Nittany Lions jumped back into the Top 10 with an overall grade of 90.822. However, South Carolina then picked up a commitment early on Friday, bumping the Nittany Lions back down to No. 11.

Now, with wide receiver coach Marques Hagans picking up both Pittsburgh native Peter Gonzalez and Long Island prospect Josiah Brown, Penn State is back in the Top 10 with an overall grade of 90.981.

Understanding On3’s Team Rankings

For those unfamiliar with On3’s Team Rankings, there are two major differences compared to other sites that you need to know.

1) We use the Industry Rankings, which uses all four major recruiting sites – On3, 247, Rivals and ESPN – to find a commutative score. It’s not based on just On3’s rankings.

2) On3’s Team Recruiting Rankings solve the problem of varying class sizes during the recruiting cycle by totaling the highest-rated commitments for each team based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power 5 schools. Currently, that average total is 11 players.

So, if you’re wondering why Penn State is lower at On3 when compared to 247 (No. 6) and Rivals (No. 7), it’s because we’re aiming to project where the Nittany Lions will truly finish come National Signing Day, not where they rank at this moment. Simply having more commitments than most other schools is why they rank higher elsewhere.

Where does Penn State rank in the Big Ten?

Since our last update Wednesday, not much has changed in the Big Ten, as Penn State remains fourth.

Ohio State has the top-ranked class still and sits at No. 3 overall nationally. The Buckeyes hold two five-star commitments and 10 four-stars for an average score of 93.007. Michigan is two spots behind them nationally at No. 5 overall. The Wolverines have 22 commitments total, including 11 four-star players. They have an overall score of 91.934 currently.

It’s USC who has made the biggest move this month, adding nine of its 12 overall commitments since June 4. The Trojans also hold nine four-star commitments and rank No. 7 nationally with a score of 91.400.

After Penn State at No. 10, there’s a significant gap to the rest of the Big Ten. Nebraska picked up two commitments yesterday to get the Cornhuskers up to fifth in the conference. Behind them you’ll find Wisconsin (No. 25), Iowa (No. 27) and Minnesota (No. 29).
