Recapping Week 2 for Penn State's committed players

Penn State’s committed players are off and running now with their senior seasons, most of whom completed week two of their season this past weekend.

Below are a few of the highlights and stats from Friday night’s high school games.

QB Jaxon Smolik

– Smolik completed 15 of 22 passes for 174 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed for 35 yards on three carries. Dowling Catholic moved to 1-1 on the season with a 45-19 win over Waukee Northwest. He’ll now face four-star QB JJ Kohl and Ankeny (2-0) next Friday.

TE Joey Schlaffer

– The future Penn State tight end blocked a punt for a safety and also scored a 47-yard touchdown in Exeter Township’s 37-21 win over Boyertown. The Eagles are now 2-0 on the season and will face West York Area (0-2) Friday, Sept. 9.

OL Alex Birchmeier

– After being upset by Briar Woods in week one, Broad Run got back to its winning ways this weekend, defeating Dominion 42-19. They’ll face Loudoun County (1-0) this upcoming Friday, Sept. 9.

OL Jven Williams

– Wyomissing improved to 2-0 on the season, defeating Pottsville 49-0. Williams, who’s currently Penn State’s top-ranked committed player, totaled seven pancake blocks. The Spartans will now face Trinity (1-1) next Saturday, Sept. 10.

OL Cooper Cousins

– McDowell improved to 2-0 on the season, defeating Bennett 34-28 in overtime Friday. Cousins totaled four pancake blocks. They’ll now face one of their toughest tests of the season next week against North Allegheny (2-0).

DL Jamieal Lyons

– Lyons totaled six tackles Friday, including one tackle for loss and two sacks. Roman Catholic improved to 2-0 as well, defeating Trinity 41-14. Trinity is coached by former Penn State defensive lineman Jordan Hill. Roman will now face West Catholic (1-1) in Philadelphia next Friday, Sept. 9.

DL Mathias Barnwell

– Barnwell had four total tackles, including one tackle for loss playing defense. He also had a very impressive one-handed catch for 14 yards playing tight end on offense. However, Riverbend got beat pretty well, losing to Freedom 74-0. The Bears will now face Chancellor (0-2) on Friday, Sept. 9.

LB Tony Rojas

– Rojas totaled 13 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown, as well as three receptions for 91 yards and a score playing offense. The future Penn State linebacker also had eight tackles and four sacks defensively in Fairfax’s 38-7 win over Langley. Fairfax now has a bye week. They’ll face McLean (0-2) Sept. 16.

Saf. King Mack

– Mack had three special plays on special teams, taking not one, but two punts back for touchdowns. They totaled 80 and 85 yards. He also then helped block a punt that fell into the end zone and was recovered for a score. St. Thomas Aquinas defeated Fort Myers 42-0. They’ll now face Cocoa (0-1) Friday, Sept. 9.
