Post-July Breakdown: Purdue Men's hoops recruiting target Jacob Webber

Following our on-site coverage of numerous June and July recruiting events this summer, GoldandBlack.com will bring you in-depth analyses of several of the Boilermakers’ top basketball recruiting targets in coming weeks, to give you a look at their games, their personalities and their potential fits should they wind up at Purdue.

SCOUTING REPORT: PURDUE TARGET JACOB WEBBER
This is an easy one: Jacob Webber is an absolutely elite, game-wrecker of a three-point shooter, the type who should carry immense gravity within an offense that can weaponize it.
Webber is legit 6-foot-6-plus and really long, with a barely reachable release point, making him a fine catch-and-shoot threat, but what really sets him apart is his ability to shoot on the move. Despite being a long strider, he is quicker and faster running off screens than you’d think and able to catch and shoot cleanly and effectively. It’s not all that common a skill, even for the best shooters, and it’s a skill smart and intricate college offenses should really covet. He makes shots moving left, moving right, stepping into catches or drifting backward off screening actions.
Webber is particularly deadly cutting to the corners and filling the wing in transition, but otherwise can dribble into threes, catch and and make difficult turnarounds in a pinch.
Beyond the threes, he can make mid-ranges off closeouts and will occasionally post up and use his height to get turnaround shots off.
Long-term, a key to college success is going to lie in his ability to play off closeouts, make the right passes and decisions and finish at the basket when there are paths there. His length really helps when he has to play off the bounce, and when your best shooter is 6-6 and dynamic, the post-entry assists are there for the taking. The defensive piece is always important for shooter types, too.

PERSONALITY PROFILE
Not much jumps out to the casual observer but the distinct consistency in Webber’s shooting mechanics and the effort he puts into getting shot opportunities speaks to a player who has put a great deal of time into his defining skill.
Another notable observation: Webber is always ready to shoot, always looking at the basket, which speaks to an aggressiveness that suits him well and should benefit teammates.
THE POTENTIAL PURDUE FIT
This specific type of player has meant so much to Purdue’s emergence into one of college basketball’s pre-eminent offensive programs. Webber is Sasha Stefanovic in David Teague’s body. He may not at this point have as much “game” as Ryan Cline, but he and Stefanovic are the gold standards for move-and-shoot guys at Purdue and they won a ton of games at Purdue and created so many opportunities for big men by moving defenses around to set up post-entry angles and such.
From baseline-screening actions to the standard machinations of the Boilermakers’ current ball-screen actions, Webber seems like a central-casting sort of player for Matt Painter, P.J. Thompson, etc.
