SMU will be without forward Sam Walters against Arkansas State on Friday, a source told On The Pony Express. The 6-9 transfer injured his ankle against Arkansas-Pine Bluff Tuesday night in Moody Coliseum.

The Mustangs look to stay unbeaten with a win Friday night at 8 p.m. CT on ACC Network Extra.

Walters is expected to be re-evaluated after the weekend, but he’s likely lost for the next week at minimum. In five games with two starts this year, Walters averaged two points, 1.6 rebounds and .6 assists per game on 30.8 percent from the field.

He made his first and only shot against UAPB Tuesday, a three-pointer, which the hope was would spur some momentum for him, but instead he was injured shortly after.

Walters played two seasons as an underclassman with one at Alabama and one at Michigan. He averaged 5.2 points (42.6% FG, 38.2% 3PT) and 2.1 rebounds in 60 games as a reserve for the Crimson Tide and Wolverines. He was limited, though, in Ann Arbor with a back injury that ended up being season-ending after posting 5.0 points (42.5% FG, 36.6% 3PT) and 1.6 rebounds in the 23 games he played for the maize & blue.

On the flip side, forward Jaden Toombs is getting closer to a return. The freshman talent could make his debut next week at Mississippi State, but that’s not a sure thing at this stage.

The Mustangs improved to 5-0 with a 106-60 win against UAPB Tuesday. Six Mustangs scored in double figures with Jaron Pierre Jr. recording a game-high 23 points. Boopie Miller tallied his second straight double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. Thirteen Mustangs saw action in the 46-point win, which tied for the 10th-largest victory in program history.
