WATCH: Jonathan McGill talks SMU spring practice

SMU safety Jonathan McGill met with the media early in spring practice to share his early takeaways on how the Mustangs look as the 2024 team starts to take shape. Check out his full interview at the top.
The Coppell, Texas native is excited about how the team can learn from last year and start fresh at the same time.
“It feels like Day 1 all over again. Getting a chance to meet new faces, getting a chance to see guys that we don’t really work out with,” McGill said. “When we work out, we go like skill all work out together, bigs go work out at a different time. Getting a chance to be back around everybody is always fun. Like a kid in a candy shop. It’s a new team so you know we got that hunger got that chip on our shoulder. What happened last year learned from it as experience, right? Take that forward, but you know it’s a new team, new environment, so got to go at it like like we haven’t before.”
The Mustangs lost some key contributors, but also brings in some new faces that can contribute and learn the culture Rhett Lashlee’s staff is establishing.

“I know we’re a pretty experienced group. A lot of veterans on this team. Also, lost some guys to leadership. Guys like Tyler Lavine, Elijah Chatman,” McGill said. “Some depth in the D-line, but you know we got some guys that are here right now. That’s doing a great job of buying in. It’s just establishing that team chemistry right now. That’s the biggest thing.
“That’s what you start at and I think we’re doing a great job right now. Two practices in, everybody’s gelling well, competing well, so it’s all you can ask for at this time.”
