South Carolina will be without one of its potential starting linemen and a promising young freshman will be limited in Saturday’s spring game.

Gamecocks’ guard and tackle Jakai Moore will miss Saturday’s spring game dealing with familial matters, Shane Beamer said on Carolina Calls with Todd Ellis.

Moore won’t be in town, instead attending a funeral in what Beamer called a tragedy in his family. Beamer initially mentioned Moore was dealing with an off-the-field circumstance a few weeks ago and that’s obviously lingered as spring practice ends.

Beamer also said freshman EDGE Desmond Umeozulu will be “limited” Saturday night in the spring game, although he didn’t mention what ailment Umeozulu was dealing with.

Umeozulu had received a ton of praise from his coaches and teammates this spring as an early enrollee. They were impressed with his athleticism and length at EDGE and with him out it means a thin EDGE room is a little bit thinner for Saturday’s scrimmage.

Umeozulu was a four-star prospect in the 2023 class. On3’s Industry Ranking had Umeozulu as a four-star prospect, the No. 149 player nationally and a top 20 player at his position.

Beamer didn’t mention any other players who will for sure miss the game Saturday, saying a few guys who have been banged up are fighting to get back and play some in the game.

The Gamecocks have been banged up and thin in the secondary this spring.

There’s nothing long-term right now, Beamer said, that will linger into summer workouts or even into training camp in August.

South Carolina’s spring game kicks off at 7 p.m., the second consecutive time under Shane Beamer. It’s something he likes for his team and in recruiting.

“I know our atmosphere will be awesome on Saturday. And compared to a lot of other schools we’ll have more people in the stands than some other schools as well,” Beamer said. “Making sure those high school prospects know it’s not like this everywhere. Gamecock Nation and Williams-Brice Stadium are special. We don’t take that for granted and don’t want recruits to either the support we have here.”

South Carolina has one more practice Friday morning before Saturday’s spring game as well. The Gamecocks practiced three times this week, including scrimmaging Tuesday morning.
