2023 point guard Milaysia Fulwiley announced her five finalists and South Carolina made the list. The Gamecocks are joined by Ole Miss, Miami, Florida, and Louisville.

Fulwiley is a 5-8 point guard from Keenan High School in Columbia. She is currently ranked 16th in the 2023 class, but has been ranked as high as second.

Fulwiley has been one of the elite players in South Carolina, regardless of class, since she was in middle school. She received her first two offers as a seventh grader, from Ole Miss and South Carolina on the same day. She has offers from virtually every program. Fulwiley is on the small side but is extremely quick and explosive and is an elite scorer. She plays with a flair that makes her a star on social media (behind-the-back layups and spin moves are constants).

It seems like Fulwiley has been a Gamecock target forever. Dawn Staley and the Gamecock coaches have been regulars at her games. Fulwiley took an unofficial visit to South Carolina at the end of June, 2022. Her recruiting has been relatively quiet for a player of her ability, perhaps because everyone expects her to stay home.

Fulwiley would be following in the footsteps of Ashlyn Watkins and Talaysia Cooper, two top twenty players from South Carolina in the class of 2022 who stayed home to play for the Gamecocks. Before them were players like A’ja Wilson, Alaina Coates, and Aleighsa Welch who stayed home to help build the program.

South Carolina does not have any commitments for the 2023 class. Other top priorities include Tennessee post Aalyah Del Rosario, Mississippi wing Madison Booker, Florida forward Chloe Kitts, and California guard Judea Watkins. South Carolina is a finalist for Booker and Kitts, and Del Rosario is going to announce her finalists soon.

The Gamecocks need to replace Aliyah Boston, Brea Beal, Zia Coke, Laeticia Amihere, and Olivia Thompson. They made up the 2019 recruiting class, the best in program history, although all have the option of returning for a Covid super senior season. They also lose Victaria Saxton and Kierra Fletcher.

That leaves the Gamecocks with just one point guard on the roster, although Cooper played point guard in high school. That makes finding a point guard to back up and then take over for Raven Johnson a priority. Johnson played just two games last season as a freshman before a torn ACL ended her season.
