2023-24 Big 12 Conference opponents revealed for Texas men's basketball

Texas’ final year as a member of the Big 12 Conference will be one of the most challenging in program history. Not only are perennial powers Kansas and Baylor a part of the league, but teams like Kansas State, TCU, and Iowa State are on an upward trajectory, and other programs like Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma are tough outs. Add powerhouse Houston and other newcomers like Cincinnati, BYU, and UCF, and the league will be one of the best in the country in 2023-24.

The Big 12 announced Thursday who each team will face as part of conference play this year. To make the 18-game slate, the conference put five home-and-home opponents, four home-only opponents, and four away-only opponents on each team’s schedule.

Texas will have home-and-away games with Baylor, Houston, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. The Longhorns will only host UCF, Iowa State, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State. Rodney Terry’s team is set to face BYU, Cincinnati, Kansas, and TCU on the road.

Dates for each game will be announced later this summer. According to the Big 12 press release, opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results, and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitiveness.

Other aspects of the Texas schedule currently known are a road trip to Milwaukee, Wis. to face Marquette and former UT head coach Shaka Smart on December 5, and participation in the Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden on November 19 and 20. UConn, Indiana, and Louisville are set to participate in the multi-team event.

The Longhorns were 29-9 during the 2022-23 season and 12-6 in Big 12 play. Texas reached the Elite Eight for the first time in over a decade, and took home the Big 12 Tournament championship. Terry became acting head coach on December 12, 2022 in the wake of the arrest of Chris Beard. He was named permanent head coach after a season where he was 22-8 leading the Longhorns.
