Five-Star Plus+ forward Ron Holland requested a release from his national letter of intent with the Longhorns on April 28. The program gave him that release in recent weeks, re-opening the recruitment of one of the best players in the 2023 class. The winner in the latest sweepstakes wasn’t a college, but a professional opportunity.

Holland told On3’s Joe Tipton he will bypass college and join the NBA’s G-League Ignite program. Holland is ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2023 On3 Industry Ranking. On3 also ranked Holland as the No. 3 overall prospect in his class.

He is the highest rated player in the On3 Industry Ranking to embark on a professional opportunity. No. 7 overall prospect Matas Buzelis also will join G-League Ignite. No. 14 overall prospect and fellow former Texas signee AJ Johnson will play overseas with an Australian team.

Holland originally expressed interest in playing for Rodney Terry alongside Johnson. He reversed his decision in late April, asking for a release from his letter of intent. Men’s basketball signees can request a release from their LOI if the head coach they originally signed with leaves the program or is fired, as was the case with former Longhorns head coach Chris Beard. Holland, however, chose to wait until well after the season and Terry’s elevation to permanent head coach before announcing his decision.

Texas currently does not have a signee in its 2023 high school recruiting class. The Longhorns added four players from the transfer portal in the recent window: Oral Roberts guard Max Abmas, Virginia post Kadin Shedrick, UTEP post Ze’Rik Onyema, and UT-Arlington guard Chendall Weaver.

Ron Holland Scouting Summary

“Ron Holland has good positional size, but it is how hard he plays – on both ends – that gets people talking. Holland has performed at the highest levels, with Team USA, on Nike’s EYBL circuit, and at Duncanville High. Coming into his junior season, the question mark was the skill set; he has shown some improvement. While the jump shot is still below average, he can use the dribble to get downhill, and he’s developed confidence in his pull-up jumper. Holland is great in transition; he plays above the rim and has the upside to be an excellent defender – both on and off the ball. Production and winning that is what he has done for a while. — Jamie Shaw, On3 national recruiting analyst
