Marcus Carr named first-team All-Big 12, other Longhorns honored

Texas guard Marcus Carr was named a first-team All-Big 12 selection while fellow guard Sir’Jabari Rice was honored with the conference’s sixth man of the year award in addition to third-team All-Big 12 and All-Newcomer team accolades.

Carr, a super senior in his second season at Texas, averages 16.2 points, 4.2 assists, and 3.0 rebounds per game for the Longhorns. He boasts a 44 percent shooting percentage, a 37 percent three-point shooting percentage, and a 79 percent free-throw shooting percentage.

In conference play, Carr averaged 15.4 points per game and 4.2 assists per game. He helped the Longhorns go 12-6 in Big 12 play and finish second in the league. Carr was a consistent scoring threat across his 36 minutes per game and was the team leader for the Longhorns this year.

Rice, a super senior transfer from New Mexico State, was the Longhorns’ sixth man throughout the year. His work off the bench garnered praise not just from the Big 12 but from outlets around the country. In 31 games, he averaged 12.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per contest, shooting 47 percent from the field, 39 percent from three, and 87 percent from the line. In conference play, Rice averaged 14.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. He reached double-figures in 15 of the final 19 contests of the season.

In addition, fellow super senior Timmy Allen was named an All-Big 12 honorable mention. In conference play, Allen averaged 11.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest

The Big 12 player of the year was Kansas’ Jalen Wilson, who was unanimously selected. The defensive player of the year was Kansas’ Dajuan Harris. The newcomer of the year was Kansas State’s Keyontae Johnson. The freshman of the year was Baylor’s Keyonte George. The most improved player was Kansas’ KJ Adams. The coach of the year was Kansas State’s Jerome Tang.

The four other players on the first team with Carr were Wilson, Johnson, Baylor’s Adam Flagler, and Kansas State’s Marquis Nowell.

Texas is the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament. The Longhorns will face the winner of Oklahoma State and Oklahoma on Thursday night.
