The expectations for Texas are as high as they’ve ever been under Steve Sarkisian, and there’s a belief among fans, commentators, and advanced analytics alike that the program will be able to meet them this year. Further evidence of that was released on Friday as Texas was No. 5 in Pro Football Focus’ preseason power rankings.

The Longhorns were behind No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Michigan, and No. 4 Ohio State. The next closest Big 12 team was No. 11 Oklahoma, followed by No. 15 TCU, No. 17 Kansas State, and No. 31 Baylor.

PFF is higher on the Longhorns than either of the two major polls. Texas was ranked No. 11 in the initial Associated Press preseason top 25, while the Horns checked in at No. 12 in the first Coaches Poll.

Additional data included with the power rankings included PFF projections. PFF creates probabilities for each team to make a bowl, win its conference, make the College Football Playoff, and win the College Football Playoff based off of “10,000 season simulations given Team Point Spread Ratings, Strength of Schedule, and team records.”

Texas had a 79% chance to make a bowl, a 13% chance of winning the conference, a 7% chance of making the CFP, and a 1% chance of winning it all.

Georgia was the overwhelming favorite in those categories. They are as close to a 100% lock to make a bowl as the data can produce. They were also given a 38% chance to win the Southeastern Conference, a 71% chance to make the College Football Playoff, and a 27% chance of completing the three-peat.
