Who's next for Texas football: A look at the Texas A&M Aggies

For the first time since 2010, the Texas A&M Aggies are heading to Austin. Mike Elko’s program is in a unique position as the Aggies are undefeated and playing for their first ever appearance in the SEC Championship Game. Meanwhile, Texas is looking for its first win over Texas A&M in Austin in almost 20 years and is also vying for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
Here’s a look at the Aggies.

Upcoming opponent: Texas A&M Aggies
Head coach: Mike Elko (2nd season), 19-5 at Texas A&M
2025 record: 11-0 (7-0 SEC)
Last game: Texas A&M won 48-0 versus Samford
Star offensive player last time out: WR KC Concepcion – 5 catches, 42 yards, 1 TD
Star defensive player last time out: EDGE Cashius Howell – 1 tackle, 0.5 TFL
Quarterback: Marcel Reed – 189-for-306 for 2752 yards, 25 touchdowns, 8 interceptions, 77 carries, 395 yards, 6 touchdowns
Offense: Offensive coordinator Collin Klein has a lot of toys at his disposal. He runs a balanced attack that blends some familiar option principles with a modern passing game. Reed’s ability to deliver to his talented wide receiver corps and also work behind one of the better offensive lines in the nation has A&M as one of the best offenses in the country this season. That’s a testament to the ability to get the ball into the hands of Concepcion and Mario Craver. Both have over 750 receiving yards this year and have been critical to Reed’s and A&M’s successes.

Defense: Elko’s defense is currently run by Jay Bateman, and it has talent at all three levels. Cashius Howell is one of the best pass rushers in the nation at the EDGE position, Daymion Sanford and Taurean York are high quality linebackers, and Will Lee has been a leader at the cornerback position. Throw in other contributors like Marcus Ratcliffe, DJ Hicks, and Dalton Brooks and the Aggie defense is doing its part in helping A&M win.
Texans on the roster:
- A significant amount. More on that later this week.
Former Longhorns on the roster
This guy is on their team?
- RB EJ Smith – After a four-year career at Stanford, EJ Smith elected to return closer to home and join the Texas A&M program. Smith has seen some action this year considering there have been a handful of injuries in the Aggie running back room, and has 36 carries for 164 yards and three scores. The son of Emmitt Smith, EJ Smith was a member of the class of 2020.
All-time series: Texas leads 77-37-5
Last matchup: In 2024, Texas returned to College Station for the first time since Justin Tucker‘s kick sent the Aggies to the SEC with their tail between their legs. Instead of one final heartbreaking moment, Texas squeezed the life out of Kyle Field. Arch Manning had a a rushing touchdown, Jaydon Blue logged a touchdown catch, and Bert Auburn added a field goal for Texas’ 17 points. The Aggies’ only score was on a pick-six. The Longhorns defense kept the A&M offense out of the end zone, an image captured by Ethan Burke‘s goal-line stand late in the game. Texas won 17-7 and earned a place in the SEC Championship Game as a result of their win in Aggieland.
