Ahead of the game, check out the Opponent Preview, running down the Colorado starters and their success (or lack thereof) on both offense and defense this season.

We also looked at Five Key Matchups to Watch as the Trojans take on the Buffs. And one or two of them even have to do with what takes place on the field in this one.

Greg Katz provides all the Obvious and Not so Obvious news and notes for this one.

And see what head coach Lincoln Riley said about the injury status of several key Trojans.

Riley talks Caleb Williams and the Heisman Trophy

USC quarterback Caleb Williams will need strong performances against UCLA and Notre Dame in order to win the Heisman Trophy. This one against Colorado won’t mean much. But something in the neighborhood of five total touchdowns and 300 passing yards would continue his upward trajectory.

He’s firmly in the discussion right now. But Williams just doesn’t have that marquee win to push him into that top group with Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud and Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker.

USC head coach Lincoln Riley said those awards races will play out and be decided over the coming weeks. But he did throw some support behind Williams in those talks.

“Up to this point, I don’t think there’s been a better, more valuable player in college football than him,” Riley said.

Williams’ statistics are extremely impressive. He’s completing 64.5% of his passes for 2,742 yards and 28 touchdowns against just one interception. And he’s rushed for 287 yards and four touchdowns. He also has enough standout plays to this point to put a full-season highlight reel together. The opportunities awaiting him, just as with the entire USC team, are massive.

Riley and Williams coming to USC and, in their first season, turning a 4-8 program into a Pac-12 Champion with a Heisman Trophy winner would be an extremely impressive feat. There are plenty of things that need to happen and improvements to be made before then. But the table is set.
