2 of the transfers PS was after but we will get Cepheus if he clears admissions
What is the chances with Prather? Is he interested? I know he was visiting Maryland recently, and that is very close to his home.

@Tom McAndrew or anyone, how do all these offers work? I mean, is there room for all of these guys who are offered? If so, are their guys on the team who know their services won't be needed if certain of these portal guys accept but can/will stick around if they don't? Or, unlike say a job offer, are there contingencies attached to the offers like "yes, you can play for us if we don't land some other guys that we want first"?

nobody likes to see how sausage is made. ;)

there isn't a blanket description that applies to all situations.

You have 2023 recruiting class taking place, recruiting of JUCOs taking place, recruiting of players that have entered the portal for potential transfers, discussions with PSU players they want, who either redshirted or are 2nd or 3rd on the depth chart to try to keep them in the program, and discussions with players that can opt for the draft. For the coaching staff, that's quite a few balls to be juggling at the same time.

this thread is about players in the portal, so let me focus on that. PSU seems to want 1 or 2 WRs, 1 DT, and 1 OT. The need is greatest at WR, so the PSU coaches are being very active in terms of evaluating and handing out offers. Some of the offers are just to get in the conversation, especially if things don't work out with other prospects. They may get more serious about some of the offers in January, once they see how things work out with other prospects in the portal, as well as all the other variables in the previous paragraph.

I think that I get caught up in the definition of an offer. It doesn't seem to be a true offer of a scholarship but rather an offer to consider potentially possible consideration for a contingent future relationship. I assume nothing is written apart from a text message.

yeah, things have changed with regards to offers and what they represent.

years ago, PSU mostly sent out offers to prospects that they wanted, though depending on academics, need at a position, or other variables, not all offers (to high school prospects) were committable (meaning that a prospect could just call up and say they were committing, and PSU was fine with that). Those with non-committable offers usually (pretty much always) were informed of what the variable is, and were also informed if the offer became committable.

the pandemic really changed things, at least for PSU. They used to like to have a relationship with a prospect, but would hold off on offering until they actually visited, so that they could evaluate them in-person. In the early part of the pandemic, no recruits could visit, so if there wasn't a prior relationship PSU was kind of in a bind. Prospects started getting bombarded with requests to Zoom with teams, so many of them started indicating that they wouldn't Zoom with a team unless they had an offer (a way of separating who was interested, and who was just kicking tires and/or stringing them along). While the pandemic has diminished a bit, and recruits can now visit schools again, a lot of recruits (and their coaches and/or advisors) recognized the change in dynamics, and continued to insist that they would not visit unless they were offered in advance. I'm speaking broadly here, and there are exceptions to any broad statement, but the general situation is as I outlined.

Returning back to the portal dynamics, PSU in prior years would wait to get transcripts, as well as to complete their video review, before they would make an offer. They found that other schools were being far more aggressive about portal recruiting, and in some situations kids in the portal had selected their next school before PSU had completed the aforementioned tasks. So PSU switched their processes a bit this year, and has handed out far more portal offers than in past years. Not all of the offers are committable at this time, but it puts PSU in the discussion/running, while PSU continues the other parts of their process.

PSU also has become far more active in evaluating potential portal targets during the offseason. Some members of the staff are tasked with trying to identify players that may be inclined for various reasons to go in the portal, and they do preliminary evaluations of them incase they do go into the portal.

Cephas to Pitt. Bummer. Word is some of his credits wouldn’t transfer over to PSU, but of course Pitt takes anyone …so it’s no problem

No. They don't. That comes across as sour grapes.
Dante had offers from us, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and Georgia. He chose Pitt. So be it.

It definitely doesn’t take anybody. I’m actually very surprised that if his credits didn’t transfer here, they transferred there.
