I agree 100% with your thoughts but we can't want matches decided by what we want rather than the stated rules. I liked the old rule, but we would be in even a worse situation if some of the refs decided to ignore the new rule and just defer to the old "better" rule. I still want a 3 point reversal, a zero point escape, and a push out rule, but it wouldn't be great if I started officiating and just enforced my desires. The rules people need to have some balls.
There is no old/new rule. They’ve just taken “reaction time” and interpreted it as something completely different from what it’s always been.

You've been MIA here pretty much most of the

Im.glad you came to ***** about this.

I thought you died.
JS8793 is a great and fair minded poster. I really have missed he,Madden, and chief. He is right to feel strongly that the new rule sucks because it does. It cost PJ against Taylor earlier this year. I think he is just frustrated because it at least used to be a no doubt takedown.

I know it’s impossible for you to think outside of blind team loyalty so you wouldn’t understand.

I don’t even care about the hawks much anymore. Not fun to watch and not competitive. This isn’t about PSU hate. Clearly the best program of all time and a joy to watch wrestle. This was just a breaking point after an entire season of this mess with the officials.
You're dumb. The way takedowns have been awarded all season it was a guarantee this was going to happen. And it's gonna happen at Nationals as well and it might be a PSU wrestler that gets screwed. Something needs done. As far as my loyalty I don't give a **** where they seed Rocco at Nationals and his win and big 10 title will be just a memory to me.

You do realize Blaze has a 3-2 record against Davino. Blaze definitely didn’t deserve to win today. I think he will have a different game plan if they meet again
It’s just that he seemed to have the same game plan as the first time they met which resulted in a pretty unlikely win. Not sure why there wouldn’t have been a different game plan ready for this time? Look at the PJ/Taylor difference since the 1st match.

I certainly don’t think he’s outmatched. But I’m absolutely not confident he’ll win if they meet again.

The old rule didn't allow for reaction time. The new rule allows for reaction time. That is the difference. I agree it sucks but it has been called that way all year. PJ would be undefeated it not for "reaction time"

@js8793 i absolutely agree that these calls shouldn’t be called the way they are. It hurts the sport. We should encourage scoring instead of taking points away. That said, until the rules change this is 100% how it’s been called all year. The thing I had a problem with is saying it’s PSU bias. This same call went against them this year
I retract the PSU bias part (though like a lot of big programs, Iowa included, you do generally get a favorable whistle).

The Duke example is a great one because it might be the thing that keeps him from being a 4x undefeated champ and that’s disgraceful!

I don’t care about freestyle. I can have my opinion. I’m a PSU fan and I don’t want them in semis together.
You absolutely can have your opinion as I have mine. I was just pointing out that it seems like a super tough matchup for BOTH guys. I believe Blaze gets the next one. I actually kind of want a Jax vs Blaze semi or a Blaze vs Seidel semi with Davino getting the other guy.

Oh...I agree with him as well but wtf. Dude goes MIA all season only to come here and ***** about PSU getting a favorable call that so many from other teams have been getting all year. That's my only beef...

This problem is happening precisely because the officials DONT want to live with human error. They’re trying to legislate tough calls out of the sport. That’s why we have the edge stall rules which suck. It’s why they’ve expanded reaction time to the point if the call is even close they can just say “reaction time” a punt on it.

They’re afraid of being yelled at. They’re afraid to do their jobs and that makes them unqualified to continue.

Do we really want to live in the world where you can plant someone on their shoulder with a mat return with a second left on the clock and it not be a takedown because of some theoretical reaction time that very clearly had no effect on the position? It helped you guys today. It might cost you a title tomorrow. So just evaluate it on the actual merits.
Tonight we celebrate it. In two weeks we burn down the internet.

The sport won’t loose any fans from it.

The sport loses fans when 83% of the guys don’t score or even try to score. Controversy is actually good.

I’ll leave it up to the coaches, enforcement bodies, sports media, etc to do something about it.

Simple question: what happens to Welsh if you take away that hand in that second. Does he fall on his face or does he magically levitate?

People with your mindset are killing the sport. This really isn’t about PSU at this point. It’s about the state of the sport. This is just one example out of a hundred this year where those idiots are butchering the sport.
You are 100% correct. Terrible rule but how it has been called all year. I respect your opinion as you are always fair. We can disagree with respect as we always have. Please keep posting when you have time. I have always liked your perspective.

It isn't who he has been in the past. I hate the rule too even though my guy won.

The old rule didn't allow for reaction time. The new rule allows for reaction time. That is the difference. I agree it sucks but it has been called that way all year. PJ would be undefeated it not for "reaction time"
There was only a brief period when they took reaction time away. For the vast majority of wrestling’s history reaction time has been in the rulebook and generally defined the same (loosely as “not instantaneous”).

This used to be widely interpreted as a very very short time, usually a split second to allow some kind of reaction. Now it’s interpreted as “as long as the defender is still moving he has reaction time.” It’s a radical departure from the tradition of the sport.

The first possible takedown in the sequence (Welsh hand down) is an example of a tough call historically in wrestling. Calling reaction time there is 100% defensible. The new part is saying that getting returned to the mat with a second left on the clock is not enough time for reaction time. That was a no doubt takedown for my entire life up until this year.

And it’s not always consistent this year either. Watch this:

This is correctly called imo but there’s less reaction time here than what Welsh got in the final. One of these calls has to be wrong.
