Since this board is full of people that just missed out at Q school, what is the best you've ever shot at State which is a course I'm sure all of us have played. My best was a 75. Doubled 12, bogeyed 1,2,6,14,15, birdied 3,13 eagled 7. This was when 1 was right of the driving range. I know they flipped it at one point.

In 5 years, was only under par on 2 rounds.
#6 or what used to be #6, the far north hole, is my least favorite hole in all of golf. 450 yards from the back, on all down the left side, massive pines all down the right side, and a back to front sloped green that pissed anyone off when the pin was up.

Didn't play there much my last year or two though since highlands was a ton more fun and played for free.

eagled the old 7 with a 3wd to 4 ft and 11 (from the fairway). It is a great course. 3 (old 12) is a ***** of a long hole and the toughest on the course IMHO. The new 18 has an easy drive and the toughest approach in the state if the pin is in the back.<div>
</div><div>In my 200+ rounds at state i birdied the original 18 4 times from the tips and par'd it maybe 30 times...I can't imagine those guy playing 36 holes needing a par on that hole to make their Class-A teaching license. What a *****. The drive at 17 (new 8) is the toughest drive on the course unless you hit a wood/3-iron.. Its in my top 5 of courses, if I could only play, if I had one course to play after Squire Creek in Ruston, LA, Spring Creek in Memphis, Hilton Head, Blackhorse South in Houston, and Oxmoor Valley Ridge course in Birmingham.</div>

it's called WHACK - 17.

I think my best was upper 80's, that's been a long time ago.

113 at the MGA State Junior Tournament when I was about 15. I managed to duck hook an 8 iron out of bounds 3 or 4 straight times off the tee on one of the back nine par threes. I doubt anyone can beat that...

then you overshot the pin by at least 100 yards. It's the second shortest par 3 on the course playing right around 120 yards.

I have been playing the course usually twice a week during Spring-Fall for the last 3 years and 84 is the best I've mustered. But, I am not a very good golfer and really struggle on the closing 4 to 5 holes. Pulled a 38 out of my *** one day on the front, then again, the front is where you score.

If you haven't played out there in a few while come on out and play a round the next time you're in Starkville. We have really done a lot in the way of making it a place for people that aren't students to enjoy themselves. In the near future we are hoping to renovate the clubhouse as we have outgrown its current size tremendously.

To add a bit, during the summer, I play Patrick Farms, Castlewoods, Caroline, the Refuge, and an occasional round at Whisper Lake, Niknar, and Bovina. Our course is in better shape than all of those. We really take care of it. It's a very enjoyable 18 holes, and though we can't legally sell beer, "brown bag" is definitely permissable.

I always loved State. The fairways were perfect. The manicuring was great the only problem I had was every now and then 110 yard SW's would bounce eight feet in the air off the green. The craziest two shots I've ever seen were on #12. My friend hit a driver that hit the power lines overhead and kick right into the woods. The next shot (local rules say you retee and hit with no penalty) he bounced it on top of the wire TWICE and it landed about 100 out in the fairway. That's the first power line aided drive I've ever seen. If I wasn't there I wouldn't believe it either. #16 was always my favorite whole, even if I didn't get off the tee well, I always seemed to hit that green, and I was a terrible long iron player.

then yes. Best way to describe it now. The power line still comes into play off the tee on #12. #1 runs parallel to #9 which is right by the large pond/lake. #10 is totally revamped and is a quarter mile away from the clubhouse back towards town. To get to #10 tee you must take a dirt cart path that runs alongside 182 for that quarter mile. It plays about 105 yards to the same green that it originally played to. We added in a small pond protecting the front and right sides of the green so you have to get it there. That said, we normally have an Ace there at least once every 3 or so weeks.

Easiest way to explain I guess is when you walk out of the clubhouse, #1 tee is straight ahead in front of the putting green.

As for that pesky power line. I honestly thought the probability of hitting it off the tee was 1 in a million. Playing in a group of 4 a while back, 3 of the 4 of us hit the power line off the tee. It truly is amazing how often I've seen it happen.

My favorite thing about old #10 was during the winter they did test grasses there so it was the only hole on the course with green grass.

But really, the shortening of 18 makes up for turning the drivable par 4 on 10 into a par 3. Does that make sense?

So really, I feel like I have a better chance to score the way it is now as a 71 than I did when it played as a 72. 18 was just too long.

I got a student membership one summer and walked at least 9 holes almost every afternoon, a lot of times with people on the golf team and PGM majors (which improved my game tremendously). I was consistently shooting in the upper 70's. That being said if I played another course, except Clear Creek, I would shoot in the mid 80's because I knew every inch of State's course.

at MSU are 1,3,4,5,7,8,10,13,16. The fairways are nice but I can't stand those greens. I struggled to read them and think they are inconsistent. Membership was cheap though as a student.

Why would you think that? The thread is about best round there, not average score.

I came to school as a 1. I left school as probably a 5.
I would guess my average out there for all the times I ever played was a 79.

Take that and apply it to everyone that posted. Someone shooting 78 as their best means 87 or so on average most likely.
Etc etc etc.

I doubt you even understand how the handicap system works, don't try and reference it unless you do.

67 low round there 20 years ago. Swing the club better today but probably couldn't shoot in 60's today because of poor short game.

I've played golf out there with TONS of people and the best score I have EVER seen is an 82... and it wasn't me. I'll be flat out honest, my best is a 91.... no way this many of you are that good. I have held memberships for the past 3 years, and I'm still looking to break 90.

I have shot in the 70's maybe 5 times in my life and I have played since I was a kid. Some days its just your day and you play better than you normally do.

State's course is not exactly a short course. Old 18 used to play over 600 yards from the tips, current hole 7 plays a long 560 yards, and you not only have to be long, but accurate. The only par 5 on the course I have seen anyone remotely come close to reaching in 2 is current hole 11. I have played with a lot of people who played golf in high school and Jr. College and still, the best round I have seen anyone shoot is an 82. Most "good golflers" I play with can consistently shoot in the mid to upper 80s.

I never made an eagle at State's course. I typically shoot 83-88 when I play. Like I said some times its just your day. The guys I played with shot better than me most of the time. Usually high 70's/low 80's. They could crush it.

And I have friends who shoot ~80 all the time at what I'd consider average courses. I make no claim on being a golf expert, but I suspect my experience is in no way uncommon.

You have multiple memberships and can't break 90? Might be time for a new hobby or something...
