I'll post this every Sunday

1 Danny Hurley
Can't be anyone else

2A. Rick Pitino
I have no issue with anyone putting Willard here

2B Kevin Willard
This coming week can change opinions

1. Hurley — On cruise control now until the NCAAs, which they can win.

2. Willard — He looks to have righted that leaky ship. He’s well-resourced, but he didn’t just throw money at the biggest names. Even in the portal era, this feels sustainable.

3. Quick Rick — I fully expect them to flame out again when it matters.

How the hell is Willard 2 and Rick 3?

Pitino - 9-1 with no point guard and losing the BE POY

Willard - lost to UConn, St. John’s, and Creighton. His best win is @ seton hall?

St. John’s is currently underachieving; Villanova is currently overachieving.

Again this is strictly based on conference games…in what universe is stj underachieving & nova overachieving

Well, they do have a good win at Villanova but a bad loss at home to Providence. The rest of their BE schedule has been bad, very bad.

It’s based on the preseason predictions. Just like Pitino won league and national COY last season when he took a team picked 5th to a historic season with 18 league wins and both regular season and tourney titles. Although apparently that doesn’t matter per above (although I have to think we would be happy if Seton Hall had that type of year, I know I would).

Hurley’s UConn was picked last year to win the league but he wasn’t mentioned in the COY discussions because they “only” went 14-6 in the league.

COY usually goes to the team that finishes at or near the top of the league and significantly outperformed preseason expectations. Unless a team is just so dominant like SJU last year or UConn before that. Like Shaka in 22-23 or Anderson in 20-21. Or even Willard who won a co-share in 15-16 (with Wright, I think).

It creates a more difficult standard for the top, top guys, but it is what it is. Doesn’t mean they haven’t done a good job because Pitino or now Hurley always do a really good job. It’s more about the nature of the award itself.

kw is my choice.

Paying 15 mill for sju disqualifies Rp for me

Willard's in the discussion for sure. Curious though - if SJU's NIL -- whatever it is, which no one knows -- disqualifies Pitino, does it also disqualify Hurley? So that's how you land on Willard as the default?

And does that also mean in the other high major leagues, the coaches of the teams at the top are likewise DQ'ed for COY consideration in their respective leagues?

Willard if Villanova makes the NCAAs. First year coach who comes in and turns the program around and makes the tourney. Finishes 3rd in the BE and maybe even makes a run at 2nd place.

Willard will not win COY if Hurley goes undefeated.

Hurley in a runaway as of today. UConn wasn't picked to win the league and they're clearly the best team in it. Pitino a distant second for COY again, as of now.
Rick just closed the gap somewhat. Still a strong edge to Danny (as of today, as always) but not a runaway. A long way to go.

1. Hurley (smalllll lead)
2. Pitino

Willard can’t be mentioned until he beats a decent/good team in conference. 0-3 vs Uconn, StJ, Creighton (at home)

Also of note:
Zuby should be POY, even if Uconn wins league
Billmeir should be COY in his league

If UCONN goes 19-1 in the league, which they might, Hurley wins COY. They were picked second with 4 first place votes, and SJU was picked first with 7 first place votes. SJU will get tripped up again here or there, and unless SJU beats them in Storrs, I don't think Uconn is losing again. If both Uconn and SJU get to a few more league losses, then it becomes open for Willard to steal it if Nova keeps on winning a high percentage of their remaining games.

It would seem to me that UConn probably will finish 18-2 at worst. 19-1 is a distinct possibility. You never know though, upsets happen. @ Butler can be tricky, but they should win that. @ Villanova will be a challenge, as will SJU in Hartford. Looks like a fairly easy road on paper, but you usually get the other team's best shot when you're the top dog.

Still lots of important games to play. Nova against UConn and SJU. And SJU against UConn.

That's why every week the projections are to date.
