I think recency bias might rule the day as many of our readers never saw Danny play.

But we're talking BE POY and 3rd string All-American his senior season after averaging 25.9 PPG. Throw in the Haggerty Award and I'm going with DC slightly over KC.

I didn't see Callandrillo play but the awards, recognition, and statistics are awfully compelling. I'd have to take him over Khadeen, who was also a terrific player.

A question, though: Could Danny play defense?

Which superstar guard would you take to play the shooting guard position for the Hall and why?

Callandrillo

Carrington

I love Carrington...but graduated with Danny...lol.

Take Danny...could shoot the ball!

Absolutely. Steals doesn't by itself make for a good defender, but with that thought in mind Danny C is second in all times steals with 260. Right behind Fu..

Also keep in mind that when Callandrillo was Big East POY for a 2-12 team, the other first teamers were John Bagley, Sleepy Floyd, John Pinone, Corny Thompson and David Russell. Ewing (the Defensive POY) and Mullin were both second team as freshmen!

Danny was a beast, McNeil could play but the rest of the roster was really bad.

I'd have to go with Callandrillo, just a better pure 2.
Definitely Callandrillo. And I don’t even consider using the word “superstar” about Carrington. Very good 4 year player. Loved everything about the kid. But not at DC or true “star” level which is a high threshold we haven’t had many of at any position.

Dan Callandrillo for me. A great shooting guard who was hands down the best player on the team and thus, the one player on which other teams focused. I would tune in to Seton Hall games back in the early 80's (whenever they were locally televised) just to watch him play. Meanwhile, Carrington, while very good, played on a well-balanced NCAA Tournament team, on which he was arguably not even the best (or most valuable) player. I think the stats, to which you linked, bear this out. Callandrillo shot 51% (!!) from the field, and led the conference in scoring, free throws made, free throws attempted, and steals. And as someone else pointed out, he was also the Big East Player of the Year in 1982-83.

Let's not forget the guy who came right before DC and a great one in his own right....Nick Galis who became a huge star in Europe and won many awards there:

After high school, Galis enrolled at Seton Hall University, where he played college basketball as a member of the Seton Hall Pirates. In his senior 1978–79 season, Galis saw his scoring average reach 27.5 points per game, which was third in the nation, behind Idaho State's Lawrence Butler (30.1 points per game) and Indiana State's Larry Bird (28.6 points per game),[15] including a 48-point outburst against the University of Santa Clara.[16]

Also in his senior year of college, Galis won the Haggerty Award (the New York City metro area's best player award), and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Player of the Year award. The same year, he also played in the Pizza Hut All-American game, alongside Bird and Vinnie Johnson.[17] During his four-year college career, Galis played in a total of 107 games and scored 1,651 points, for a career scoring average of 15.4 points per game.[18]

Galis' head coach at Seton Hall, Bill Raftery, would later state that Galis was the best player that he ever coached
. While at Seton Hall, Galis was a good friend and roommate of Italian-American professional basketball player Dan Callandrillo.[19] Galis was later inducted into the Seton Hall Athletic Hall of Fame, in 1991.

Danny for sure. That does not diminish my high regard for Khadeen. Both Pirate greats IMO but Calandrillo was so good.

Calandrillo. If you were fortunate to see him play it’s not even a discussion and I love Khadeen.

Dan was a machine as close to a one man team at Walsh in the good old days. He mesmerized me at times sitting in the cheap seats. Wich still weren't bad!
