Just he does constantly. What was he complaining about? The Marquette defender walled his guy up and stopped him. Great fundamental and legal defense.
Did he call a foul on you?I met Pat Driscoll totally by accident in Naples, FL earlier in 2025. I just recognized him from TV and stopped and talked to him. Couldn't be a nicer person.
The old man was 10x worse. Everybody in the state hated him, especially the other JC schools. Was the father as big of a jerk as his 2 sons on the sidelines?
Read the book years ago. It’s great and your comments above are all accurate. The reason why the other high school coaches hated him though was because he recruited the best players from the public schools to St Anthony’s and then beat them with kids who were or would have been at their schools. Complicated but he impacted positively hundreds of kids lives. His father was notoriously hard on his players. My friend once scrimmaged a great St. Anthony's team in the 90s, and he said they could not believe how verbally abusive Hurley Sr. was to his players.
All that said, the man is a saint in my book. He literally saved thousands of kids lives, and kept that school running for years through his own work and fundraising. I know coaches who attended his basketball clinics where the checks were made out to "St. Anthony's". He didn't take a dime. If you ever want to read a terrific sports book, Woj's "Miracle of St. Anthony" is a must. The stories told are awesome and give great insight into the man. He believed he had to be as hard as he was on his players because, given most of their backgrounds, if he let them off the hook for a second they would get into trouble and go down the wrong path. Instead, he got literally all those kids into colleges of different types, even as team managers, because so many college head coaches would do anything to make him happy (they wanted his players) and because they respected him so much. There is a great documentary or two out there as well worth watching for any sport fan.
No doubt, like all coaches, he wanted to win. So he was going to get players if he could. From a technical standpoint, I've read statements from numerous college or even NBA coaches who consider him "upper echelon" at any level from a coaching standpoint.Read the book years ago. He was hard on them, but it was tough love. I personally know of many cases where he helped kids and their families financially. His father was notoriously hard on his players. My friend once scrimmaged a great St. Anthony's team in the 90s, and he said they could not believe how verbally abusive Hurley Sr. was to his players.

He had kind things to say about Sha too. My wife was in absolute disbelief that I could on the spot stop on a dime and place him as a referee on tv. But he does sort of have a distinctive look. Great hair for his age. I don't think he's lost a single follicleDid he call a foul on you?
That schedule was not playing many jersey city schools during their seasons. I am sure they had no issues inviting him to speak at clinics though. The old man was 10x worse. Everybody in the state hated him, especially the other JC schools.
Oh yes....Danny and Bobby are definitely carrying genetic baggage. But they inherited plenty of good from him as well. Was the father as big of a jerk as his 2 sons on the sidelines?
A friend of mine has a cousin who grew up with Bob Sr in JC. Not pals, but friendly. Thru another group of jc friends of his, we got season tickets for the 92 and 93 seasons. We sat with 4 or 5 other JC guys, one of whom controlled the tickets.Read the book years ago. It’s great and your comments above are all accurate. A fine doesn't hurt him or the team. Suspending him loses real value and valuable to the team. He should be suspended for a league game next season. The Big East front office/Val punked out yet again, Hurley did make some contact with the ref, a real no-no.
Also thought he was improper to scream at Kimani Young twice, "Don't f'ing touch me!"
Val should suspend him for next season league game
