If we fired Stoops after next season and he took a job a year later like Muschamp, with a structured buyout, Stoops would be getting $3.75 million that first season to not coach here, $4.0 million the next season to not coach here and finally $4.25 million to not coach here in the third and final year based upon the 100% guarantee of the numbers in his contract. So, Florida is paying $1.26 million in a year that would presumably cost Kentucky $4.0 million. It's a bad contract for the university and no amount of being buddies with the athletic director will change that.
Steve Kragthorpe was bought out at Louisville after year three for $2.2 million total and he and Jurich were great friends. Mark Richt was bought out for $4.4 million. Mark Stoops would be $15.5 million this year and $12.25 million after next year. We would have to wait until after the 2018 season for Stoops' buyout to become lower than Mark Richt's when it would reach $4.25 million.
The renegotiation of Stoops deal occurred during the 2014 season right after we had won the South Carolina game during our hot start. It was at the absolute height of his bargaining position and also the very first chance he had to really cash in here. We negotiated out of fear and weakness. The end result was a contract extension some five months after the prior extension because the coach and his agent sensed weakness and basically robbed the athletic department blind. Stoops doesn't have to win another game here and will walk away with life changing money.
In hindsight, it looks like the coach's first priority in the middle of the season was getting himself paid. That's troubling, especially in light of the fact that he had just gotten the standard re-up in May that would have sufficed for most in his situation. If he were a star professional athlete looking for a better deal some five months later, during a hot streak, in the middle of the season, he'd be roasted.
