Jacob Dar is a 6’7”, 170 pound rising junior swing man from Rice University (13-19, 4-14) of the American Athletic Conference (the half of the old Big East Conference that decided to chase football money). Dar has grown three inches since he graduated high school, and probably needs to put on some muscle and fill out. He spent two seasons at Division 2 Emory and Henry College before transferring to Rice.
Last season, in 31 games (13 starts) Dar averaged 7.5 points and 3.7 rebounds, while playing about 20 minutes per game. He is the best shooter on the 2025-2026 Seton Hall team – he shot 40% from the floor, 75% from the line, and most importantly, 37% from behind the three point line last season. His three point shooting average is the highest of all current Pirates. The concern here is that he only took about 3 treys a game last year.
Dar is the most versatile scorer on the Pirate roster. He is a good corner shooter, and a very good catch-and-shoot guy. And he is a good enough ball handler to go coast-to-coast on the break. He can get inside – more than a third of his shots come at the rim. Although he is a decent shot blocker, he needs to work on his defense. He has a below average Defensive Bayesian Performance Rating, whatever that is.
Coach Holloway, in his nj.com interview with Adam Zagoria, said of Dar, “He’s really athletic. He kind of reminds me of Ismael Sanogo but better offensively....He’s got a high motor, he’s 6-7, 6-8, can shoot the basketball, put it on the floor. His defense is not where his defense was, but it’s getting there, and I think he can be really, really good for us if he keeps developing.”
Last season Dar had his ups and downs. He had a six-game stretch in February where he averaged 16 ppg -- including a 24 point night against UAB (4 of 7 from three point land) and 21 points against Tulane (6 of 7 from three). But in his next four games, he scored 3, 5, 5 and 7 points on reduced minutes. I haven't been able to find out if there is an explanation for those subpar games (like injury) or if Dar just blows hot and cold.
The general consensus is that Dar is on an upward trajectory and can emerge as a real star next season for the Pirates. He was heavily recruited out of the portal -- Gonzaga and Minnesota, among others, were both very interested.
The minutes are out there for Dar in 2025-26. Of the three point shooters – Dar, Staton-McCray, Williams III and Parker – Dar is the most versatile and the most experience. If he takes the next step, he can be a real asset for Seton Hall.
