Terrific article by Jerry. Great achievement by Sha and the coaches winning 20 games this year. Let's see if we can close it by winning 21 against the Johnnies who looked very good against Nova this weekend.
Losing Hines hurts because he provides that physical body to wear down Zuby. Hope he heals quickly and can give us some minutes. I thought his D last night was bad most of the night. He is still a freshman and you can see him get out of position quite a bit defending. I am not sure if it's his low minutes but I was hoping he would be more of a force by now. Payne has to be ready to go as he will play a lot of minutes.
Very glad to see Mike Williams bounce back this year and showing some consistency too. He is becoming a very key player for us. AJSM shot it well from deep which changes everything for us - we need his senior leadership out there. Clark had a solid game and presents match up issues for Xavier. Hoping he isn't hurt too badly and can use his speed against St Johns.
Our team has not finished against any of the big boys ahead of us in the standings. It's time.

Probably better than we imagine, if in part because of the coaches' possible desire to spread the award around a little bit rather than have Quick Rick and Danny hand back and forth to each other.
That's a strong point Jerry made to me.
If Holloway could beat Pitino Friday that would eliminate him. Then it would come down to Hurley, Willard and Holloway. And if DePaul beats Nova that would probably eliminate Willard and maybe get Holtmann into the conversation.
In a couple of days this should all take care of itself.

It’s going to be Hurley or Pitino and it should be Pitino. What’s he 40-5 the last 2+ years in the conference? If that was Shaheen this board would meltdown over the award slight.
As far as Shaheen goes this year, even a win against St Johns won’t be enough. That would put him at 1-5 against the teams above us. That doesn’t scream coach of the year to me
17-3 in the conference eliminates Pitino from COY? I don't think he's getting it anyway because he won a million awards like this last season, but 17-3 is 17-3.
I went back and looked at past coaches of the year in the league. The only time in recent memory that a coach has won the league with a conference record like ours was Mike Anderson in 20-21. Similar situation in that they were picked towards the bottom of the league and finished in either 4th or 5th. But it was also an odd dynamic because it was the first post-COVID year and no team ran away with the league. Had one of the teams gone 18-2 or 17-3 like Uconn and SJU have run through the Big East this season, I'm not sure Anderson would have gotten the award that season.
Other than that outlier, at least in recent years, typically a team has a much stronger league record than 9 losses for a coach to win COY.
As far as Jerry goes, asking him about this particular topic is akin to asking Al Jazeera what it thinks of the Iran conflict. Of course he is going to be puffing Sha and even Willard to some extent because of the SH connection.
That's the issue. I don't see how KW gets it going 0-4 against the two top teams, or Sha even with a win Friday going 1-5 against the teams ahead. I think you can make a case for either given the preseason coaches poll, but its hard to discount 18-2 or 17-3 because even in a down year it is never easy to win road games in the league, etc.
Should Dave Roberts have been the NL COY last yr. He had the most money, the best team and he won it all, again. Well, he won it... in 2016.

Picked last in a landslide, finished 4th. That is a guy I always consider.
By your logic, whatever teams are picked 1st and 2nd in the preseason are automatically eliminated for coach of the year. You can’t just do that.
If ever there was a season that proves it, it’s this one. A bunch of mediocre teams beating up each other while the top 2 beat up everybody.
I agree. But as i see it, the guy who was picked preseason top ten, then went unranked and has yet to go back to expectations, is having a dIsappointing yr.
Dan on the other hand, is right where he was exoected. And Sha is where no one even dreamed he would be.

There isn’t a single coach in America that you would characterize as having a “disappointing year” at 17-2 in the league and 23-6 overall. You know it. I know it.
Are they as good as the lofty preseason expectations of some? No. But the aren’t off by much. Because it is clear some of the portal class isn’t as good as folks thought they would be. Which happens annually now in this world of portal madness.
There is some gray area between that and having a “disappointing year”. Because we build statues here for less than 17-2 and 23-6, coming off a year where the did things that program hasn’t done in years.
About a week ago, you posted the coach who will not be mentioned as being a “landslide” COY winner. Shortly after they beat Uconn. Now they get waxed by them, and if one game coupled with whatever happens later this week changes the view from him to Hurley, I totally get it. But there is a pretty big universe between that and “disappointing”.
Of course I will get slammed for giving an opinion that I would give for literally any other coach in the country under the same circumstances. And that’s where PDS comes knocking on the door.
Worry not, I think we have a really good chance to win Friday night and I will likely be in the building with my kids. You can then bask in the notion of them going 17-3 instead of 18-2.

I agree. He never had success in his career before SJU. Thankfully he has Magic Mike around.
