Great link. That's the kind of info they could have stuck into the series in some way. They were crafty about doing such things as this in the early GoT seasons. Character discussions that revealed the world. I just think it is missed opportunity to get viewers invested in understanding the world and see it as a living breathing world that makes sense.. that the motivations of characters are recognizable.

And, as you say was hinted in the teasers for Ep4... yes.. the need to show Draegon gaining support is obvious.. rather, TOO OBVIOUS. That's the danger of not explaining the world well enough.

The whole battle seems like it is merely a vehicle to explain why Draegon becomes a legitimate contestant for the Iron Throne rather than the need to defeat the crab king in the greater scheme of thing explaining the opportunity that Draegon cashed in on.

In this way it is as if the TV series needed that battle to help that character rather than Westerosi houses needed that battle and they reward Draegon because he won it.
Yes, that website is the best for looking up the source material. Keep it handy!

And here is the best YT channel for breaking down episodes and previews. The creator agrees with your assessment of Crab Feeder (could have explained it better)

love the link by the way

I love GOT but this is seems rushed so far.
It is rushing a bit to get to the actual Dance. Personally, I am fine with good quality set-up and explanation, but society has a short attention span! 😁

That's what I don't get. They spent no time explaining what the CrabKing wanted. What he thought to gain for himself and his people.. whatever they were.. scavengers, pirates? No effort whatsoever was made to explain that situation... so, with this "victory" apparent at the end of the episode.. what was won? Again.. no effort. About the only thing the story advances is that Prince Draegon has won some standing. I am not even sure who was riding the dragon while Draegon was fighting his one-man assault on the island and caves. No effort was made to show the supporting army arriving to invade.
Agree 100%. I’ll give it a pass because it was entertaining but one minute Dameon is bashing a guys head in and next minute dragons are torching crab feeders and army’s are battling. Too many gaps.

You know what was the biggest gap of the battle? The f'ing dragons breathing fire on everyone! Gotta give it some slack (especially with the TV medium). :)

Reminds me a recent story. Can't find the clip, but Matt Smith saw online fans complaining about his character riding dragons too high in the air. It's unrealistic because at those heights, Prince Daemon or any rider would freeze to death. How can it be that Daemon survives such flights? He joked.....I have no idea, I'm riding a f'ing dragon. Maybe the dragon is heated and keeps me warm. LOL!

We have a saying in my family.. mocking each other for comments like this... it goes...

"So.. that's what you have a problem with? THAT's where you fail to suspend disbelief?"

Then it is followed by some obvious impossibility you readily accept... like in this case.. that he is riding a dragon or that dragons exist in the first place... and that they listen to people and allow them to ride them and can understand Valyrian language.

"That's where you draw the line... that is just too much for you?"...

I personally think the wokeness of today's productions.. particularly all the female action heroes.. they are fun to watch.. but, come on.. a 90-pound super-fit tiny female warrior is not going to send a large brute of a "red shirt" flying across the room with a punch or kick or even a weapon strike. Sure, they could be on some strange planet facing hulking aliens.. but physics still work in that world.. I'd expect. But they cannot simply have male hero types anymore.. not without equally heroic females.

"That's where you draw the line..."

Everyone has a different line in the sand! The Marvel MCU is getting a lot of s for going way too woke at the expense of quality and storylines. Diversity can be achieved without crossing the line.

It is such a strange phenomenon.. it is almost as if projects with typical male (and especially white male) protagonists cannot get greenlit... so they make everything about women.. and especially minority women or LGBTQxyz types... even if they have to change a traditionally male character to female (Captain Marvel, Thor).. I liked Captain Marvel well enough... but it is just getting to be all too much.

I saw recently some comments by Eli Musk along these lines about Amazon Prime's LOTR series.. that suggested it's all girl-power stuff... all the guys are weak or jokes. Now, I think that's a bit of an exaggeration after just 2 episodes... but the writing could be on the wall that is what is happening.. but I suspect Musk is just trolling Bezos.. who trolls Musk and even tried to make it more difficult for musk to get things done.. re: Mars, Space, etc.

Best YT channel for episode breakdowns:

I've been listening to The Ringer podcast recaps.
I never read the books and know nothing (call me Jon Snow).

Unfornatuely, I listened to the segments that specifically say "we are going to discuss the future and what's in the text now. spoilers ahead".
Now I know mostly the basic storylines and outcomes.
I usually don't care about spoilers or knowing what happens but.......now I'm kicking myself a little bit.

I'm most excited for how they are going to casually explain the time jumps in the beginning of each episode.
"It's been 6 months since the Queen passed"
"It's your child's 2nd name day"
Its like when they casually say the name of the movie in the film.

I wonder if they eventually start just putting a time stamp on the screen.

When different actors/actresses play the roles of Rhaenyra, Alicent and whoever else you’ll know there’s a time jump lol.

I haven't decided if the actress who plays Rhaenyra is hot or not. My wife says no. I'm thinkin'... yeah, maybe.

Were Daemon and Otto in cahoots? The brothel scene with Daemon was uncomfortable.

I'm wondering if Daemon planned this event to get Otto removed as Hand. He knew Otto is a selfish weasel who would run to the King with such info. Not sure about this.

Perhaps Daemon's plan was just as he said to the King, to take Rhaenyra as his bride. Why he pulled away and ran to his wench is debatable. Maybe he's conflicted or got the heebie jeebies from kissing his niece or maybe it is planned as suggested to create chaos for the King. So far the show suggests that Daemon and Ryaenyra have a special bond so it leans toward the former unless you suggest Ryaenyra also in on the plan, which seems like a reach.

So Otto is becoming the Littlefinger evil genius? He's been stoic so far, although with some hints of cunning. He looked hurt when the King dismissed him. Who will be named the new hand or does it not matter since all hell is about to break loose?

I think that Strong guy will be named the Hand. He is the guy that actually gave the King good advice on who Ryaenyra should marry.

Also, next episode is a Wedding episode! Those are always fun in this world. LOL!

She isn't hot. She has the chin of a wrestling coach.

Overall the cast is pretty ugly. Too many English people. LOL.

So we get the big time jump for E6.....new actresses playing Alicent and Rhaenyra. So, I assume the King dies next episode or perhaps E7?

Nobody does a wedding episode like GOT! 😁
Yeah, but thought it was pretty good even before the party. I missed who the skinny guy who spoke to the princess was.

Funny thing is I liked the character of Daemon’s wife, lady Rhea.

Spoke to the Queen? That skinny guy in the garden was one of the Strong boys. I don't understand this yet, since the Strong father is the new hand.

FYI - greatest line to start a synopsis article:

"It’s a wedding day in Westeros; what could possibly go wrong?"

I liked Rhea’s line to Daemon about sheep.
I thought the big fight was going to be Rhea's cousin trying to kill Daemon at the wedding for revenge. They set that up nicely, but I guess it was a swerve.

If you’ve seen neither…watch this first and then Game of Thrones?

Or does it even matter?

You definitely don't need to have watched GoT prior to HotD, but it gives you context and experience with the world (and enhances the new series).

GoT is a long series.....8 seasons, 73 episodes. Truly amazing (with a bad, rushed ending).

For me Alicent has become the best character so far. Can see her really going darker.

excellent episode, just finished watching it. I think the younger strong is such an evil fk but can't believe the dragon did that as I thought they would protect them no matter what. Interesting turn on that part but overall very good episode.
